a BATTALION Thursday, September 18, 1969 College Station, Texas Page 5 P l To Be Inducted Into Hall Of Fame The original Texas Aggie Twelfth Man, an All-Amterica guard and two All-America full backs will be inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame Nov. 8. The four newest honorees are E. King Gill ’24, Marshall Foch Robnett ’41, Robert L. “Bob” Smith ’61, and John P. “Jack” Pardee ’57. Gill, now a Corpus Christ! phy sician and surgeon, was called from the stands by coach D. X. Bible to suit up and be ready to play if needed in the 1922 Dixie Classic bowl game in Dallas when the Aggies upset the then unde feated Praying Colonels of Centre College, 22-14. Gill did not get into that game, but his act gave birth to the tradition that Aggies stand at all football games so as to be ready should the coach call for their services. Gill went on to win his letters in football, bas ketball and baseball, serving as captain of the 1924 basketball team after winning All-Southwest Conference honors twice. He also won his letters twice each in his other sports for a total of seven. The late Robnett won his All- America honors in 1940 after be ing named to the All-Southwest Conference teams in 1939-40 as the outstanding guard on the 1939 National Champion Texas Aggies. The Houston Post selected him as the Most Valuable Lineman in 1940. He won three football let ters and one in track as a jav elin thrower and held the heavy weight boxing and wrestling crowns in the college intramurals. Robnett served in WWII. In 1942 he was named Rookie of the Year as a center with the Pitts burgh Steelers. He died of cancer in Dallas December, 1967. Smith won his All-America honors in 1950 as the bruising fullback who ran for a total of 1302 yards on 199 carries and for 297 yards in one game against SMU, both marks coming in 1950 and which still stand as South west Conference records. Other honors which came to Smith in his career included: All-SWC 1949-50; Sophomore Player of the Year 1949; Athlete of the Year in 1950 as selected by the Texas Sports Writers Association; Most Valuable Back and Most Valu able Player at A&M in 1950; Co captain of 1950 football team. He played in the East-West Shrine game in 1951. He served as a lieutenant in the Air Force in the Korean War. Pardee is the other fullback to win All-America acclaim for his performance in 1956. In 1955-56 he won All-Southwest Conference honors and was named Most Val uable Back by the Houston Post in 1956. He also made the Schol astic All-America team in 1956 and was named Most Valuable Player in the Blue-Gray game that year. Pardee has played pro football with the Los Angeles Ram since 1957 and has been named to sev eral All-Pro teams. While recov ering from a cancer operation in 1965, Pardee served as an assist ant to A&M coach Gene Stallings. In 1966, Pardee returned to the Rams and is now playing in his 13th pro season. The induction of these four brings the total enshrined in the Hall of Fame to 27. Copies of the citations now hang in the Lettermen’s Lounge on the A&M campus. ElmendorfFina lly Settles Position In a world of specialists, Texas A&M’s Dave Elmendorf is a rar ity. The junior safety is a throw back to the days when athletes did anything and everything . . . and for the pure joy of it. As a sophomore during the 1968 season, Elmendorf played fullback, tailback, wingback, line backer and safety. While at one of the running back positions, the Houston Westbury product car ried 29 times for 177 yards and a 6.1 average. Those totals include a team best of 17 carries for 129 yards against Florida State. He caught six passes for 91 yards and scored three touchdowns be fore switching to defense where he intercepted a pass and re covered a fumble. That’s good versatility for a football player, but Elmendorf’s talents don’t end there. To top it all off, the 6-1, 190- pounder is also a distinguished student in the College of Liberal Arts. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Elmendorf of Houston, Dave al most didn’t make it to A&M. Pro baseball wanted him badly following a high school career which saw him hit hit over .400 twice and gain All-America hon ors. He was also president of his junior class, vice president of his senior class and a member of the National Honor Society.
