T Texas A&M is initiating a study to determine the feasibility of “harvesting” rain as a means of meeting future water needs in arid sections of the United States and other parts of the world. The two-year program will be conducted by A&M’s Water Re sources Institute under a $24,775 grant from the Department of Interior’s Office of Water Re- . sources Research. I Dr. J. R. Runkles, acting di- ‘ rector of the institute, said ons of the areas to be explored in- Harvesting Rain To Be Studied Wednesday, August 27, 1969 College Station, Texas Page 3 THE BATTALION volves possible development of economical means of treating the earth’s surface to increase run off. “The amount of water which can be conserved for beneficial use in Texas amounts to a vast supply if harvested runoff from selected areas were stored for future use,” Runkles noted. He pointed out such use might represent the greatest value of some marginal lands if an eco nomic method of sealing and pro tecting the soil can be developed. The i-esearch project will be directed by Dr. Otto C. Wilke, assistant professor at A&M’s Agricultural Research and Ex tension Center at Lubbock. Runkles said Wilke will em phasize the hydrologic aspects of water harvesting. The study will include an evaluation of types of sealants, slopes, erosion and pre cipitation. Evaluation also will be made of various combinations of land surface treatments and land forming methods. “Success of this research would have tremendous potential im pact in West Texas, as well as in other arid parts of the nation and world,” stressed Runkles. Water harvesting is not a to tally new concept, the director pointed out, but its application is seldom economical through utilization of existing techniques. A&M Cadet Cited For Work At Benning Summer Camp Zirconium, beryllium and tung sten are among the metals proc essed in solar furnaces because of their high melting points. A 1969 Texas A&M graduate, John M. Snell of Lufkin, has been cited at Fort Benning for his per formance in a basic ROTC sum mer camp. Completion of the six-week camp qualified Snell to enter the advance ROTC program at A&M in September. He will be study ing for the Animal Science De partment’s new master’s degree in feedlot management. At the same time, Snell will be working on junior and senior military science courses leading to an Army officer’s commission. The unique summer camp con ducted by the Fort Benning Training Center’s 2nd Brigade provides active-duty training in lieu of two years on-campus study. 3H ill Iir yTHgE PRICES Good - ThuPS - fpi ^ -g/M~ = -zg> 5 30 FRESH WEAP i!§ll TDyMATO ^TSUP 19 StoKeLY'S 14-oz.BTL. . ,(11^113 pie\5E) ICE CPEAM .59 Ryy KIN0- I 1 (^4FT15 49 leeiYwiaatY fpuit5 ^ vtezWLez alw / ay55f^fh»m6 fpw California Sunkist ORANGES Lbs.
