From the collection of Dr. Leslie V. Hawkins, 50 relics of man’s efforts to make life a little easier are displayed in cases near the library’s main checkout desk on the first floor. tie, raisin grinder, cherry pitter, sugar auger, lemon squeezer and apple peeler (which Hawkins calls “a mechanical engineer’s nightmare”) token the wide va riety of mid-to-late 19th Century appliances a homemaker might Hawkins gathered the collec tion from Mexico to Pennsylva nia and Oregon, Pakistan, India and Saipan. His relics of bygone workshops date from the Stone Age. “Each item tells its own story," the professor commented. “Eacli is a lesson in history, a story of man’s struggle to reach the ‘good life.’ The slow, methodical progress toward a better stand- ard of living is plainly visible," The industrial education pro fessor’s display will be on public view through the summer, an nounced John B. (Jack) Smith, assistant director for public Engineering Dean Says ‘Opportunities Tremendous services. Exhibit items sample Dr. Haw kins’ more than 800-piece collec tion. Many of the tools date from American Independence and are of obscure use to the casual uni formed glance. Among the wood working tools is a molding cutter for ship lap siding and a beveling tool. Massive iron square-shanked nails also are included in the at tractive display that includes library reference materials on many of the tools. NEW SERVICES BUILDING This is the progress being made thus far on the new $1 million Student Services Build ing adjacent to Duncan Dining Hall. The projected completion date is set for April 1, 1970. Chain Reaction With great ceremony, the boy gave the lead domino a gentle poke. A rapid series of sharp clicks proceeded down the line, paused briefly at a gap too large, then continued onward. Then, abruptly, every thing was still. He was tickled speechless. He clapped his pudgy hands together and gave me a big, proud smile. Giving our faith to God is like pushing over that first domino. It starts a chain reaction—one that re sults in a richer life, greater happiness and a deeper confidence in ourselves and in the future. Why not come to church this Sunday? Let God start a chain reaction in your life. Benson. “Competition causes excellent starting salaries and chances for advancement,” the dean noted. Benson said figures released by the American Society for En gineering Education showed U. S. colleges granted 38,002 bachelor degrees, 15,152 master's and 2,933 doctor’s. In contrast, Benson pointed out that Russia graduates 138,000 engineers a year and Japan turned out more than 200,000 engineers and scientists in 1966. “Americans have been warned repeatedly of a technical man power crisis in the 1970’s if the present trends continue,” Benson exclaimed. Texas A&M’s 1968 engineering enrollment was about 3,050, up 234 over 1967. There were 3CS bachelor’s degrees granted in 1968, Benson reports. A&M also granted 152 master’s degrees and 40 doctor’s degrees in engineering, an increase of 65 over 1967, he remarked.
