Page 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, June 26, 1969 THE BATTALION Hargett Leads West Stars Against East Saturday For 440 Dash Mills Smashes World Record The greatest passer in Texas A&M football history, Edd Har gett, will be on the field in Atlanta, Ga., Saturday night as the West All-Stars try to top the East All-Stars in the Coaches All-America game. Hargett, who owns all of A&M’s school records for passing and total offense, will share the quarterbacking duties with Bob by Douglass of Kansas. The 6'0", 190-pound Marietta, Tex. thrower was drafted and signed by the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League. Heisman Trophy winner O. J. Simpson was supposed to play for the West but will not because he has not come to terms with the Buffalo Bills, the pro team that drafted him. Hargett finished his senior year in 1969 by setting numerous .school, Southwest Conference, and national marks. “I don’t think that there is anyone in the country better than Edd,” Aggie Coach Gene Stal lings has said. EDD HARGETT Astros Feature 2 Special Nights The Houston Astros will have t^vo special nights during their crucial three-game series with the powerful Atlanta Braves in the Astrodome Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday night will be ‘‘Fiesta Night” with a sensational pre game musical show at 7:00 p.m. staring Lucha Villa, Mexico’s top female ranchero vocalist; De- metrio Gonzales, a leading male singer, and the Mariachis de Pepe Villa. The Astros also will honor all of the Latin American ball players from both clubs. Saturday night will be ‘‘Poster Night” as the Astros will give away free, a 24 by 36 inch four- color poster of Astros in action. There are some interesting pitching battles slated during the weekend series. Friday night’s opener will find Astro lefthander Denny Lemaster on the mound, trying to stretch his string of 26 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. But he and the Astros will be facing a toughie, Braves’ righthander Pat Jarvis, who has an 8-1 career record against Houston. Don Wilson, the Astro strike out leader, is scheduled to start Saturday night’s game. Atlanta will counter with lefthander George Stone, who was cruising along with an unbeaten record until Houston (and Lemaster) downed him last week. The Sunday afternoon “Family Day” series and home stand finale will send Larry Dierker, Hous ton's top winer, to the hill. He’ll be opposed by tall Atlanta right hander Ron Reed. Atlanta, which has set the pace in the National League’s Western Division most of the season, will bring one of the National League’s most dangerous offensive units into the Astrodome. Hank Aaron, Orlando Cepeda, Felipe Alou and Rico Carty are some of the Braves’ top sluggers. In addition, Atlanta has two popular former Astros, shortstop Sonny Jackson and third baseman Bob Aspro- monte, in the regular lineup. Plenty of good tickets still are available at the Astrodome ticket office, all Foley’s stores in Hous ton and at the Houston Bank and Trust building lobby. Tickets also may be ordered by mail (Box 1691, Houston, 77001) and may be charged on any Texaco credit card. Batt Changes Day Beginning Wednesday, July 2, The Battalion will switch publi cation days during the summer months. In the past, the weekly newspaper has always been print ed on Thursdays but will switch to Wednesdays. This will offer extra conven ience to grocery shoppers wishing to take advantage of weekend sales at stores which advertise in The Battalion. WATCH the East-West All-Star Game on Channel 3, Saturday. “Keep the faith, baby!” That’s what everyone in the sports world should have done last Saturday afternoon when Texas A&M’s supreme sophomore Curtis Mills defeated the toughest NCAA track competition imagin able. It was like a fairy tale come true as the former Lufkin Dunbar schoolboy track star broke the existing world’s record in the 440 yard dash with a 44.7 and whip ping Olympic champion Lee Evans in the process. Evans was quoted as saying that he had never even heard of Mills until he won his semi-final heat Friday. The only one to keep his “cool” throughout the whole meet was Mills himself. He had expressed supreme confidence even before he scorched the University of Tennessee Tartan Turf. He predicted to several Texas writers that he would beat both Evans, who was clocked in 45.2, and highly regarded Larry James of Villanova, who eventually fin ished fifth. “There’s no pressure on me. I’m in a better position than they are. You wait and see. My name will be in the headlines tomor row,” he said. And sure enough they were. “It’s still hard for me to be lieve what has happened,” Mills said right after the race. “Coach (Charlie) Thomas grabbed me and was hollering, ‘look at the clock’. “I saw the 44.7 but I was so happy that I won that I didn’t think about a world record. Then it hit me . . . what a feeling it was.” Running by far his best race of the year, Mills coasted into the final 100 yards expecting to finish “either third or fouth.” But he felt so good coming out of the last turn that he decided to go ahead and try to win it. Still eligible to run this summer in the National AAU champion ships in Miami and perhaps earn a trip to Europe, Mills instead decided summer school. Coach Thomas believes that Tennessee’s Tartan synthetic run ning track was a factor in Mills’ 44.7. jrsV. ' V _ ||j) ... -.. - “Tartan Turf is a soft surface with a lot of bounce. There’s w doubt that it’s the best running surface made because it ian’t hard on a runner’s legs.” MSC FOUNTAIN ROOM SPECIAL MONDAY HONEY FRIED CHICKEN French Fries, Rolls, Honey, Slaw TUESDAY STEAK FINGERS 14 Pound of Beef French Fries, Rolls WEDNESDAY HONEY FRIED CHICKEN French Fries, Rolls, Honey, Slaw THURSDAY SPAGHETTI & MEAT SAUCE Italian Salad, Garlic Bread FRIDAY HONEY FRIED CHICKEN French Fries, Rolls, Honey, Slaw CURTIS MILLS NEW WORLD S CHAMPION AT THE GROVE Tonight—The Bedford Incident Friday—Father Goose Saturday—Gambit Sunday—Bunny Lake Is Missing Monday—Tomb Of Ligeia Tuesday—Mirage Wednesday—We’ve Never Been Licked BUSIER AGENCY REAL ESTATE O INSURANCE F.H.A.—Veteran* and Conventional Loan* & HOME SAVINGS ASSOCIATION Home Office: Nevada, Mo. 3523 Texaa Ave. (in Ridgecrest) 846-3708 — : '' 3 mmi MM mt MM Safeway Speciall Cane Sugar Candi Cane. 5-Lb.
