THE BATTALION
College Station, Texas Thursday, June 19,1968
Houston’s Astros face their
longest series of the 1969 season,
a five-game weekend set against
the San Diego Padres, in the
Astrodome starting tonight.
The series, which includes a
twi-night doubleheader Friday,
will open an 11-game home stand
that also will bring San Francisco
and Atlanta to Houston.
According to the early figur
ing of the two managers, Hous
ton’s Harry Walker and San Di
ego’s Preston Gomez, the five
games between the Astros and the
Padres will exhibit 80 per cent
righthanded pitching.
Subject to change, here’s the
tentative pitching rotation:
Thursday’s series and Astro
home stand opener will find
Houston’s Don Wilson meeting
San Diego’s A1 Santorini. The
righthanders will square off at
7:30 p.m.
The Friday night twinbill,
starting at 5:30 p.m., likely will
send Houston’s winningest pitch
er, Larry Dierker, against Clay
Kirby in an all-righthanded duel
in the opener. The second game
will find Jim Ray pitching for
the Astros against either Gary
Ross or Tommie Sisk of the
Padres. All are righthanders.
Friday also will be “Foley’s-
General Electric Night” at the
Astrodome, with more than $2,300
worth of valuable GE appliances
given away to lucky fans.
Saturday night’s game (7:30)
will break into the righthanders’
domination of the series, with two
lefties working—Houston’s Denny
Lemaster and San, Diego’s Dick
Kelley.
In the Sunday afternoon series
windup (2:00), Astro rookie Tom
Griffin is scheduled to face San
Diego’s Joe Niekro in another all
righthanded scrap. Sunday’s
game will be “Family Day,” with
a $1 reduction for youngsters 14
and under when accompanied by
a parent.
The Astros will play their only
scheduled home doubleheader of
the 1969 season Friday—a twi-
nighter, starting at 5:30 p.m.,
against the Padres. Both games
will be regulation nine-inning
contests.
Registration blanks for the
drawing may be picked up at any
of the Foley’s stores or at the
Astrodome’s Kirby Drive office
on the day of the game. It will
not be necessary to attend the
doubleheader to have a chance to
win one of the valuable appli
ances.
The “Foley’s-General Electric
Night” festivities will highlight
a five-game series between the
Astros and the Padres. Action
begins Thursday at 7:30 p.m.,
when Houston opens one of its
longest homestands of the year.
San Diego also will be here
Saturday night (7:30) and Sun
day afternoon (2:00).
The Padres will be followed by
the San Francisco Giants (June
23-24-25) and the highly-success-
ful Atlanta Braves (June 27-28-
29) during the home stand.
Tickets for these games and
