Weekend Series Brings Astros Home Page 6 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Thursday, June 19,1968 Houston’s Astros face their longest series of the 1969 season, a five-game weekend set against the San Diego Padres, in the Astrodome starting tonight. The series, which includes a twi-night doubleheader Friday, will open an 11-game home stand that also will bring San Francisco and Atlanta to Houston. According to the early figur ing of the two managers, Hous ton’s Harry Walker and San Di ego’s Preston Gomez, the five games between the Astros and the Padres will exhibit 80 per cent righthanded pitching. Subject to change, here’s the tentative pitching rotation: Thursday’s series and Astro home stand opener will find Houston’s Don Wilson meeting San Diego’s A1 Santorini. The righthanders will square off at 7:30 p.m. The Friday night twinbill, starting at 5:30 p.m., likely will send Houston’s winningest pitch er, Larry Dierker, against Clay Kirby in an all-righthanded duel in the opener. The second game will find Jim Ray pitching for the Astros against either Gary Ross or Tommie Sisk of the Padres. All are righthanders. Friday also will be “Foley’s- General Electric Night” at the Astrodome, with more than $2,300 worth of valuable GE appliances given away to lucky fans. Saturday night’s game (7:30) will break into the righthanders’ domination of the series, with two lefties working—Houston’s Denny Lemaster and San, Diego’s Dick Kelley. In the Sunday afternoon series windup (2:00), Astro rookie Tom Griffin is scheduled to face San Diego’s Joe Niekro in another all righthanded scrap. Sunday’s game will be “Family Day,” with a $1 reduction for youngsters 14 and under when accompanied by a parent. The Astros will play their only scheduled home doubleheader of the 1969 season Friday—a twi- nighter, starting at 5:30 p.m., against the Padres. Both games will be regulation nine-inning contests. Registration blanks for the drawing may be picked up at any of the Foley’s stores or at the Astrodome’s Kirby Drive office on the day of the game. It will not be necessary to attend the doubleheader to have a chance to win one of the valuable appli ances. The “Foley’s-General Electric Night” festivities will highlight a five-game series between the Astros and the Padres. Action begins Thursday at 7:30 p.m., when Houston opens one of its longest homestands of the year. San Diego also will be here Saturday night (7:30) and Sun day afternoon (2:00). The Padres will be followed by the San Francisco Giants (June 23-24-25) and the highly-success- ful Atlanta Braves (June 27-28- 29) during the home stand.
