The announcement was made jointly by Dr. A. D. Suttle Jr., research vice president and Dr. M. L. Greenhut, economics head. Morgenstern will serve as a visiting scholar in the university and will work closely with Sut- tle’s research office. A mathematical economist, Morgenstern is credited, along with the late Dr. J. Von Neu mann, with the discovery of the Game Theory. The theory is a mathematical vehicle to inter pret duopolistic and oligopolistic situations in economics. It has extended into such matters as military strategy and even stra tegy in poker. The scope of this innovation was extended to the Polaris submarine concept. Born in Goerlitz, Silesia, Mor genstern was naturalized in March, 1944. He received his early educa tion in Austria, earning his doc torate in political science from the University of Vienna in 1925. He holds honorary degrees from Mannheim and Basel which he received in 1957 and 1960, re spectively. During 1925-28, he studied in universities in London, Paris and Rome, and at Columbia and Harvard on a Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Fellow ship. Morgenstern currently serves as a trustee of the Institute of Advanced Studies, Vienna, and is chairman of the Board of Mathematics. He served as a White House consultant, 1959-60, and as con sultant to the U. S. Atomic En ergy Commission from 1955-57. Since 1958, he has been a mem ber of the advisor panel to the Military Applications Subcom mittee of the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy. A linguist, he speaks German, French, Italian and Swedish.
