Editor, The Battalion: I would like to introduce to the student body of Texas A&M Andy Scott. Andy is opposing Garry Mauro and A1 Reinert in Thursday’s election for Student Senate President. Andy Scott is one of the quiet assets to A&M, the type who works for the improvement of A&M but does his work in such a way that he gains little recog nition from The Battalion and other publications. Andy’s time is taken up by being president of Walton Hall, member of Civilian Student Council, Alpha Zeta and a host of other organizations. Being in organizations such as these, he comes in contact with both student leaders and univer sity administrators and is known as a person who tells people not what they want to hear but what Andy thinks is right. This trait seems to be lacking in some stu dent leaders on our campus. Rather than do a poor job with many goals, Andy would like to do a good job with just two or three prime objectives. The main objective of Andy’s program is to put the Student Senate in the hands of the students rather than a few leaders. This he has done in Walton. The Resident Hall Psogram has proved successful in Walton because ail students are able to participate in the pro gram in every way. Another problem with the Senate is the meetings. In Walton these meet ings have been reduced from a midnight marathon to a straight- to-the-point discussion session, a much-needed reform of the Sen ate. Help the Student Senate be more functional next year. Vote Andy Scott for Student Senate President. Barry Griffin ’70 ★ ★ ★ Editor, The Battalion: When Aggies elect officers who are responsible for conduct of their student government, it is important that their selections be made on the basis of experi ence, ability, accomplishment, and unbiased judgment. Gerald Geistweidt, candidate for vice-president of the Student Body, meets all of these qualifi cations. Gerald has been active in student government during all three years at A&M. President of his Freshman Class, Gerald’ has been on the Student Senate two years and on the Election Commission for three years. He has served as vice-president of the Election Commission and, this past year, has distinguisehd himself in the role of Election Commission President. In addi tion, he has been a member of the YMCA, Senate Welfare Com- I Listen Up the bait forum mittee, Senate Issues Committee, Phi Eta Sigma, Junior Council, and numerous other student or ganizations. Through this wide participation, he has gained an insight on all phases of student activity. A distinguished student, Ger ald has shown himself an intel ligent and capable leader. He reveres tradition, but has often advocated constructive change. His progressive influence has been responsible for such needed reforms as the revised Election Regulations, the new Election Commission By-laws, and a vast ly improved Election Organiza tion in the Senate Constitution. Probably most important, Ger ald has shown himself to be un shackled to interest groups and dedicated to the long-range wel fare of all Aggies. Anyone who has been associated with him will witness that he has never allowed personal prejudice to displace principle in his judgment or actions. For these reasons, we support Gerald Geistweidt for vice-presi dent of the Student Body. We hope all Aggies will. What is needed is some unity. But first let us define “unity.” Unity is not someone saying “I am for unity;” nor is it the proper ratio of uniforms to button-down collars. Unity is hard work to ward solving the problems that beset the entire student body and attempting to communicate with all of them at the same time. We who sign this letter are not united: we include Corps members, civilians, graduate stu dents, athletes, Democrats and Republicans; we seldom agree about much of anything and some of us don’t even know some of the others. Yet we are united in thinking that A1 Reinert is the person most capable of providing the leadership necessary to solve some of our problems. Support A1 Reinert for Student Senate President. Jerry Campbell, President Student Senate ’68 Bill E. Carter, President Student Senate ’69 Hector Gutierrez, Corps Commander Mitty C. Plummer, Pres., Graduate Student Council ★ ★ ★ Editor, The Battalion: I have been asked to express an opinion regarding qualifica tions and abilities of two candi dates for Student Senate Presi dent. I have not tried to discuss the qualifications of Mr. Reinert, and I will not because I do not feel that I am qualified to do so. I have, however, worked closely with Andy Scott and Garry Mauro, and I will begin by listing their qualifications. Andy Scott has served as Presi dent of Walton Hall, served on the Civilian Student Council and on the Agricultural Council, and par ticipated in many other campus organizations. Garry Mauro has held the po sition of Junior Yell Leader, served on the Senate as Sub- Committee Chairman for Add- Drop and Pass-Fail systems and as Co-Chairman for Recruiting. He has served on the CSC as Chairman of the Bonfire, Civilian Week, and Gripe-In Committees. The candidates, as I have shown, are both capable of hold ing this high office; however, in my opinion, Garry Mauro has had the experience in the Senate which Andy has not had, and for this reason Garry Mauro is the best candidate for Student Senate President. David M. Wilks, President, Civilian Student Council ★ ★ ★ Editor, The Battalion: We, the 1968-69 Executive Com mittee of the Election Commis sion, support Jim Conway for the Presidency of the 1969-70 Election Commission. Although Jim is not a member of the present Election Commission, his interest and en thusiasm as well as his leader ship ability lead us to believe he is the best candidate for the job. He is well aware of the problems of initiating changes made in the Election Commission by the pres ent Student Senate in polling and judicial functions, and we feel he is amply qualified to handle them. Gerry Geistweidt, President Rusty Chandler, Ex. Vice Chairman Robby Dean, Secretary Frank Gallant, Personnel Tommy Henderson, Publicity ★ ★ ★ Editor, The Battalion: In the past, the position of Public Relations Chairman of the Student Senate has been a rather uncreative one. However, with student unrest so prevalent on many campuses today, communi cation between students and the Senate becomes vitally important. Equally important is communica tion between A&M and other schools. In campaigning for Public Re lations Chairman, I have offered a platform to revitalize the office. I strongly advocate: • increased communication be tween the students and the Senate, • a network of exchange be tween our student government and that of nearby colleges and universities, • more student involvement and interest in Student Senate activities, • promotion of the changing image of Texas A&M. As an architecture major, I am very much in favor of more com munication and involvement of students in matters concerning physical planning on our campus. I have been in the Corps and I have been a non-reg — I think that I know the best and worst of each. At a time when com munication between the two ele ments is so necessary, I feel that I am qualified to objectively look at both sides to any question. I have also served as Publicity Chairman of SCONA XIV and also for SCONA XV. In addition, I have been on the Executive Committee of the student govern ment at another school. In deciding whom to vote for for Public Relations Chairman, I would appreciate your considera tion Thursday. Dave Mayfield ★ ★ ★ Editor, The Battalion: For the past two weeks we have been witnesses to an unparalleled demonstration of character as sassination. The primary object of these attacks has been TOMMY HENDERSON. He has been ac cused of irresponsible political motivation in his sponsorship of challenges to Election Commis sion decisions. It is time the rec ord was set straight. For the past year it has been my privilege to serve the Student Body as your Vice-President. Dur ing this time I have worked close ly with Tommy on numerous Senate projects. There is NO in dividual on the Senate in whom I have more respect or confidence than Tommy Henderson. It has taken great courage to challenge the decisions of the Election Com mission. His challenges have al ways been fair and have been conducted on the basis or legiti mate policy questions which need ed clarification. Thursday you will have an op portunity to demonstrate your respect for his courage and lead ership, regardless of whether you have agreed with his positions or not. Tommy is running for Issues Chairman of the Senate. If you want a student leader who has demonstrated the ability and de sire to serve, I strongly recom mend you vote for TOMMY HEN DERSON as Issues Chairman of the Student Senate. Student gov ernment at Texas A&M needs leaders with courage. David T. Maddox, Student Senate Vice-Pres. ★ ★ ★ Editor, The Battalion: In the past two years election controversies have made the head lines and been the talk of the campus time and time again and, as is always the case, the respons ibility for taking a stand and making a decision has been the burden of the Election Commis sion. Having been on the commis sion this year and present when the controversial issues of cloth ing regulations during voting, campaigning procedures, qualifi cations of candidates, and location of voting places have been acted upon, as well as assisting this year’s Election Commission Presi dent Gerald Geistweidt in the last election, I feel I am both capable and willing to provide the leadership necessary to guide next year’s commission. As far as any changes are con cerned, I would see to another revision of the section in the Blue Book on elections in the hope of once and for all clearing up all the wording which has caused us so much trouble, and would see to getting polling places as convenient as possible to the stu dent body. To this end I urge all students of Texas A&M Univer sity, be they members of the Corps of Cadets, civilian, or day students, to vote for experience and desire for excellence and elect PAUL AMMONS, ELECTION COMMISSION PRESIDENT for 1969-1970.
