Page 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, April 10, 1969 THE BATTALION Aggie Baseballers Face Crucial Test By JOHN PLATZER Coach Tom Chandler is hoping his Aggie baseballers can regain their early season form this week end as they host Texas Tech in a crucial Southwest Conference series on Kyle Field. The Aggies and Tech, who will collide in a 1:30 doubleheader Friday and come back with a single game Saturday, are cur- rtently tied for second in the con ference with 4-2 marks. Consol Sweeps District Golf A&M Consolidated took the District 10-AAA golf champion ship with a 36-hole score of 624 on the A&M University Course. Humble was second in the tour nament with a 662 followed by Brenham with a 672 and La Grange with a 674. Other schools in the district are Huntsville, Cypress-Fairbanks, Navasota and Houston Furr. A&M Consolidated and Humble will be certified to go on to regional play at a later date. A trio of Consolidated players placed one, two, three in medalist play. Clay Dozier (76-73—149) was first, Doyle Sebesta (80-72—152) was second and Paul Dieckert (80-77—152) was third. In assessing the SWC race, Coach Chandler said that “some body has got to head off Texas University.” The Aggie head coach said that in order for the Aggies to do it they will have to improve their defensive play. “Our pitching has to improve along with our defense,” Chandler said. “We are giving away too many runs and you can’t get away with that.” Tech, which finished with a 2-15 record last season, is paced by second baseman Jerry Hag gard and shortstop Jim Mont gomery. Haggard hit .333 last year to earn a first team all-SWC spot while Montgomery was a second team selection with a .328 average. ed Baylor and SMU this year while Pierce, a freshman, has a win over SMU. Doug Rau and Dave Benesh are expected to start on the mound for the Aggies Friday while Coach Chandler is still un decided on his Saturday starter. Rau and Benesh have posted a combined 7-0 mark thus far this season. Tech is expected to counter with the pitching duo of Gary Washington and Jack Pierce. Washington, a junior, has defeat- Coach Chandler is expected to go with basically his regular line up of Billy Hodge catching, Boyd Hadaway on first, Pete Maida at second, Eddie Vaughn or Mike DeNiro at third and Jim Raley on short. Hodge, a Bryan product, is substituting for the injured Larry Stelley. The outfield will consist of Dave Elmendorf, Bob Long and Bob Arnold. A&M’s next action will be Tuesday against the University of Houston at Kyle Field.
