tian overcame a 12-point halftime
deficit to defeat the Baylor Bears
70-66 Tuesday night and dash the
Bears’ Southwest Conference bas
ketball championship hopes.
The Homed Frog attack was
led by the offensive punch of Bill
Swanson, who scored 16 of his
19 points in the final period, and
TCU’s famed all-court press.
Baylor committed 13 costly er
rors as a result of the TCU press.
Baylor is now 8-4 in SWC play
and TCU is 4-8. Tom Swift and
Swanson were TCU’s top scorers
with 19 each and James Cash
added 14.
Baylor was led by Tommy
Bowman’s 20 points. Larry Gate-
wood had 18, Richard Scallom 14
and Randy Thompson 10.
Bowman was the game’s lead
ing rebounder with 21. However,
TCU outrebounded the Bears
45-43.
Baylor outshot TCU from the

to 35 per cent on 27 of 77.

by Benefield to raise the margin
to 69-56. Benefield and Barnett
then made two free throws apiece
to put the game out of reach and
give the Aggies their biggest lead
of the night at 73-56. Coach
Shelby Metcalf then rested his
starters in the remaining three
minutes as the reserves got in
some playing time. The last
bucket for the Aggies was a lay
up by Harry Bostic with 0:39 left
to move the score to 79-64. Ricky
Tanneberger hit a 25-footer with
five seconds left to end the scor-
nig at 79-66.
Behind Barnett in the scoring
column for the Aggies were Cook
sey with 15, Benefield with 12,
Peret and Heitmann with nine
apiece, Smith with seven, Niles
with four and Bostic with two.
THE AGGIES finished the
game hitting 29 of 64 shots from
the floor for 45.3 per cent while
the Razorbacks were not far be
hind with 27 of 62 for 43.5. The
real difference in the game was
the accuracy of the Aggies at the
free throw line, a sore spot for
most of the season. They hit 21
of 25 as the shorter Hogs were
forced to foul more when they
fell behind. The leading scorer
for the Razorbacks was Cone,
who finished with 13 and for one
of the rare times this season, the
opposition led the Ags in turn
overs, 16 to 14.
The next game for A&M will
be Friday night at 8 when they
tangle with SMU in G. Rollie
White.

Metcalf Says 1969 Champ j

By JOHN PLATZER
As Aggie Coach Shelby Metcalf
relaxed in his office after his
team had clinched the Southwest
Conference basketball champion
ship, he was suddenly asked to
compare the 1969 champions with
the 1964 Aggie title-holders.
“I knew someone was going to
ask that question and I have
given it some thought,” the A&M
cage boss replied, “but I honestly
can’t come up with an answer.”
by one point and its losing game
was marked with a dispute over
the clock. The 1969 team has
posted an 11-1 mark with two
games remaining, has lost its only
game on the road to Baylor by
one point and in the losing effort
ran up against a malfunctioning
clock.

“I just don’t know which was
the better team. I believe they
are both good ballclubs.”
The similarities between the
two championship squads are
