Tests for the doctoral disserta tion research of A. J. Luquette, graduate assistant in the Health and Physical Education Depart ment, involved personnel, equip ment and ideas of Health and PE, Industrial Engineering, Biol ogy and Psychology Departments and the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M, E&M In struments of Houston and the Texas State Department of Health’s Air Pollution Division. The interdisciplinary research enabled examination of heart rate and blood pressure of 150 children breathing air containing cigarette smoke. “Preliminary indications are that a child’s heart rate does seem to increase in the test con ditions,” Luquette remarked. “Further analysis will be neces- STUDY IN CUERNAVACA Learn to speak SPANISH • Intensive courses, with drills, supervised labs, and theory taught by experienced Mexican teachers. • $135 per month. He said previous studies indi cate necessity of the research, which is supervised by Dr. Carl W. Landiss, head, and Dr. Donald J. Merki of the Health and PE Department. “Dr. Paul Cameron of Wayne State found in a statistical study that smokers’ children are ill more frequently than non-smok ers’,” Luquette reviewed. “A Utah physician, C. D. Fullmer, likewise believes smoke-filled rooms at home, office or in pub lic places may represent a health hazard for non-smokers.” The Texas A&M experiments, involving both children and adults, were conducted in the critically controlled chambers of the Industrial Engineering De partment’s Environmental Con trol Laboratory. The well-equip ped facility allows precise meas urements of temperature, humid ity, sound, air flow and visual ef fects. Luquette said all the experi ments have been completed and detailed analysis is under way. Sensing, recording and control equipment was supervised by Jim Hennigan, industrial engineering instructor, and Charles Brandt, graduate assistant.
