Johnson (second from left), 1937 geology graduate^ started a special univer sity program last fall and will be a certified high school teacher next fall. The accele rated accomplishment will largely be the result of work by Junction schools Superintend ent Charles L. Champion (left) and S. T. Rimes, Junction High principal (right). Dr. Roger L. Harrell is one of the A&M faculty members who arranged Johnson’s curriculum through Jamison Law provision. Accelerated A&M Program Provides Needed Teachers A consulting geologist with 34 years experience following grad uation from here and a Uni versity of Texas at Austin social studies graduate are taking ac celerated routes here to become Texas public school teachers. Their work in a program founded on the recently enacted Jamison Law will short cut the usually lengthy state teacher cer tification process. It will put George N. Johnson and Mrs. Julia Ellis in teaching in a year. Neither had educa tion courses in their undergradu ate degree work. The Jamison Law (House Bill 644 enacted in 1967) was de signed by Congressman Alonzo Jamison to speed up teacher preparation and certification of specially selected intelligent, ma ture, well-educated and concerned persons who want to qualify to teach in Texas, noted Liberal Arts Dean Frank Hubert. The special program gives credit for previous work and re duces the education course load required by the state for pros pective teachers to become certi fied. It trims the time required from a minimum of two years to one. “Acceleration is not at the ex pense of quality,” pointed out ed ucation professor Dr. Roger L. Harrell. He said hundreds of top college graduates in fields other than education want to enter teaching. “In the past, their interest waned when they found out it would take at least two years of college work to earn a certificate. Now it can be accomplished in a year,” Harrell added. Special programs based on ap plicant’s previous degree work are arranged by Dr. William H. Graves Jr., Harrell and a faculty member appointed by the Council on Teacher Education coordina tor Dr. Earl H. Knebel. The in dividual’s program requires ap proval of the Council and TEA. Johnson and Mrs. Ellis will complete the special program next August, largely due to co operation of school officials where they are doing their year of internship teaching. Superintendent Charles L. Champion and S. T. Rimes, high school principal at Junction where Johnson is in internship, are very helpful, Harrell cred ited. TSEA Chapter Elects New Officers The A&M chapter of the Texas Studemt Education Association re cently elected new officers for the coming year. They include Shirley Nichols of Caldwell, president; Milton Reichek of Houston, vice-presi dent; Jean Lowery of Carlsbad, N. M., treasurer; Michael Plate oi Bayton, secretary, and Allen Joz* wiak of Sealy and Robin Rice oi Bryan, publicity co-chairmen. Six delegates from the chapter will attend the 1969 TSEA state convention Feb. 27-March 1 at the Texas Hotel in Fort Worth, according to Rice.
