Of the 25 players named to the honor team, five are engineer ing majors, four are business ma jors, and three in math. The All- Academic team is based on the top recorded grades of SWC foot ball players and compiled by the SWC. Hargett has an IQ of 142 and made five A’s while leading the Aggies to the 1967 title. F-l had beaten A-l to reach the finals and H-l barely got by Sqd. 4 in a tie game which had to be decided by penetrations. The first touchdown of the contest came midway through the first half. Chick faded back behind good protection and threw a perfect 20-yard strike to Englert who made a fine catch for the score. Chick then made the two point conversion as he hit Barcelona. Sports Desk Ags To Win Cage Chase by John Platxer With only one play left in the half, QB Chick dropped back and went for the bomb. He heaved a 40-yarder again to Englert who snatched it on the goalline for the score. Again H-l went for two points and again Chick connected, this time to Luper. STRATEGY SESSION Senior Guard Sonny Benefield of Sweeny talks the situation over with Aggie Basketball Coach Shelby Metcalf as the fourth quarter action got tense in the 98-87 loss to Lamar Tech Monday night. The Aggies are at home again Thurs day night against Louisiana Tech at 8 p.m. (Photo by Mike Wright) Experience is the key word around Southwest Conference bas ketball circles this season, as every team is well-stocked with veterans from the 1968 campaign. Arkansas returns all five of its starters while the Aggies, Texas Christian and Southern Methodist each return four. This should make for an exceptionally interesting title chase but when the smoke clears on March 4 the final standings will look like this: 1) TEXAS A&M —The Ag gies blend a great crop of seniors with several promising sopho mores to rate as the pre-season favorites. Seniors Sonny Bene field, Billy Bob Barnett, Ronnie Peret, Harry Bostic and junior Mike Heitmann were all starters at times last season while Bill Cooksey, Chuch Smith and seven- foot Steve Niles are up from last year’s SWC freshman champions. 2) SMU—The Mustangs are short on depth but long on tradi tion and have three of the best players in the conference. These are the Phillips boys, senior Lynn (19.1) and sophomore Gene (35.4) and senior Bill Voight (18.2). Other top players on hand in Dallas this year are Gary Sibley and Woody Taliaferro. F-l FOUGHT BACK in the second half behind the nifty passing of Rothe to score when he hit Geiselbrecht across the middle. F-l failed on the try for a two-point conversion and the game was all but out of reach. Oscar For Title Hargett, Buckman Named Captains H-l got the ball again with six plays to go and main tained possession by completing several passes in a row to put the game on ice. This second place finish moves F-l into tenth place in the Class B standings. IN CLASS A BASKETBALL, E-l won their third straight game by defeating G-2, 31-23. E-l has only A-2 to beat to clinch the championship of their league. In a second game, F-2 upped their record to 2-1 by threshing D-l, 40-20. Both Marv Hoelting and Sam Torn hit for 13 points. PHILADELPHIA UP) — Un beaten Joe Frazier retained his share of the world heavyweight title by hammering and chop ping his way to a lopsided deci sion over awkward but bull strong Oscar Bonavena of Ar gentina in a foul-packed 15- rounder at the Spectrum Tues day night. IN CLASS C HORSEHOES, two league champions have been determined with Crocker and Milner already crowned. The third league is still undecided with Hotard, Phi Delta Sigma, and A.Y.I. fighting for the lead which should be decided by Thursday. The 3-1 favored Philadelphian hit the 26-year-old South Amer ican with everything he had throughout the scrap but could not drop the strong - jawed, bloodied challenger who went the limit with Frazier for the second time. Read Classifieds Daily Frazier, 203 pounds to Bona- vena’s 207, opened cuts over both of Bonavena’s eyes, on the bridge of his nose and raised lumps on Oscar’s face with his relentless pounding. The fight was the second of a televised doubleheader in some cities. In the first Sonny Liston knocked out Amos Lincoln in the A man’s razor isn’t made for a woman’s body. The officials all had Frazier the winner by the following scores: Judge Nate Lopinson 74-64, Judge Dave Beloff 72-64, and referee Joe Sweeney, 70-67. The Associated Press had Fra zier the winner 72-63 on the five-point must score system. In rounds the AP had Frazier ahead 11-4. Bonavena, fighting most of the way with his back to the ropes and his hands held high in a peek-a-boo defense, absorbed a fierece pounding to the head and the body as he apparently waited to get home one big bomb. He never came close. Quarterback Edd Hargett and tackle Tom Buckman were elected captains of the Texas Aggie foot ball team Tuesday. Hargett, the All-SWC quarter back, and Buckman were both three-year starters at A&M ahd both were members of the 1967 SWC championship team. A&M always elects its captains at the end of the year. 3) ARKANSAS—The Raw backs were the surprise of tki football season with their » championship and now threate to make it a clean sweep of tk hardwoods. Height could be tk Hogs major problem with W James Eldridge and Gary Ste phens their tallest players. Otte starters should be Ricky Tams berger, Robert McKenzie and Be ton Cone. With Cone and Stephem the only two seniors on the teat Arkansas could be a year awat 4) TCU—The Horned Fro;: won the SWC championship Its year on rebounding strength ata and with Mickey McCarty mi gone the likelihood of a reptt: performance is small.
