iophysicist To Speak CUT A relatively new field in the claiming and reuse of polluted rater, “Water Treatment by Electrophoresis,” will be a dis cussion highlight of the 13th an nual Conference on Water for Texas here November 25-26. Research biophysicist Milan Bier of Tucson, Ariz., will pre sent the lecture. Bier, associated with the Uni versity of Arizona and Veterans idministration Hospital, report- forced-flow electrophoresis has een applied to the purification of polluted waters from “a wide range of sources.” He identified them as being comprised of river and pond wa ter, floodwater, effluent of sew age treatment plants, and vari ous industrial wastes. Dr. Jack Runkles, acting direc tor of A&M’s Water Resources Institute and conference sponsor, pointed out “Bier has given par ticular attention to some prob lems specific for the arid South west” such as treatment of wa ters collected in catchment areas or impounded floodwaters. “THE METHOD HAS been found to be singularly effective in improving the quality of the treated water by completely elim inating particulate matter, such as silt, algae and bacteria, as well as radically decreasing col loidal impurities,” Bier reported. Runkles noted that ‘electro phoresis’ is the migration of elec trically charged colloidal parti cles in an electric field.” “It is well recognized as one of the most fruitful methods for the analysis and separation of complex biocolloidal systems,” Bier added. West German General Ludwig Mar tin disclosed the simple means used to smuggle a stolen 10-foot sidewinder and two hot navigation instruments to Moscow. Martin said the rocket went as ordinary air freight and the two instruments were packed in luggage and flown to Moscow. (AP Wirephoto) New Dorm Lounges Almost Completed Contractors are concentrating on having four of the six new dormitory lounges ready for use by Nov. 26. Dean of Students James P. Hannigan said the plan is to have lounges connecting dorms 1 and 3, 5 and 7, 2 and 4, 6 and 8 ready for bonfire visitors. “This is a hope and not a guar antee by any means,” the dean said. Hannigan indicated several construction items and bad weather have delayed completion of the lounges. Inside light fix tures are supposed to be here Monday for installation. “Outside lights will be placed immediately,” Hannigan noted, indicating pedestrian accidents in the unlighted areas are a problem. Furniture will be stored in each lounge’s TV room Nov. 19, from which it will be installed. After wards, cable-connected television sets and theater-type chairs will be placed. “The contractors hope to com plete all work, including that on lounges for dorms 9-11 and 10- 12, before Christmas,” Hannigan added.
