Page 4 College Station, Texas Tuesday, November 5, 1968 THE BATTALION Porkers Spill Ags, 25-22 By JOHN PLATZER The “Day of the Thrower” was celebrated on Kyle Field before 39,334 fans Saturday with the youngest thrower of all stealing the show to lead the Arkansas Razorbacks to a 25-22 victory over the Aggies. Aggie veteran throwers Edd Hargett and Randy Matson were brilliant but it was Bill Mont gomery, the Hogs sophomore quarterback, that ended up in the spotlight. Matson, the gold medal winner in the Olympics, was honored at halftime of the Southwest Con ference game and was presented with the shot with which he set the world record. The loss dropped the Aggies to 2-5 on the year and 1-3 in the conference while Arkansas is now 6-1 for the season and 3-1 in SWC wars. Hargett, a senior from Mari etta, took a grip on the position of greatest passer in the history of a conference which has seen the likes of Bobby Layne, Don Meredith, Don Trull and Terry Southall. In all, the 6-0, 190 pounder established 10 team and 3 SWC marks. The conference marks included career attempts passing, yardage passing and total plays. Hargett has 677 passing attempts in his brilliant career while Southall had 629 at Baylor, he has passed for 4,454 yards while Trull had 4,143 at Baylor and he has ran »< *• , c . I * v f 911 total plays for first place among three-year players in that category. Single game A&M records set by the 1967 SWC Offensive Player-of-the-Year included most attempts (55), most completions (28), most yardage (319) and most touchdowns (3). Career Aggie marks set by Hargett included most attempts (677), most completions (325), most passing yardage (4,454), most touchdowns (33), most plays (918) and most total yards (4,512). Hargett broke his own Aggie record in each category. Montgomery, a native of Car rollton, Texas, almost matched Hargett’s performance hitting on 20 of 28 passes for 2&8 yards and two touchdowns. Coach Frank Broyles’ Porkers scored the first time they got the ball in the game driving 83 yards on 14 plays to take a 6-0 lead. Bill Burnett, who was Arkansas’ top runner in the game with 66 yards on 28 carries, climaxed the drive with a one-yard plunge. A strong wind blew the entire game with each team beginning each of its scoring drives with the wind. A&M fought back to score twice in the second quarter and take a 14-6 lead into the dressing room at halftime. The first Aggie score covered 40 yards in only two plays as Hargett hit Larry Stegent for 12 yards and then came back to find Bob Long for 28 more and the touchdown. Two possessions later the Ag gies scored on a Hargett to Bar ney Harris pass good for eight yards which completed a 13 play, 56 yard drive. Montgomery, who threw only eight passes in the first half, un limbered his arm in the third quarter to riddle the Aggie de fensive secondary. By the time the air raid had passed the Hogs enjoj^d a 25-14 lead with 13:34 left in the contest. The Aggies battled back and when Hargett found Long in the end zone with 2:41 left, the score became 25-22. A&M had the ball one last time in the game and began a drive from their own 10 to the 42 before time ran out. Wendell Housley topped A&M ball carriers in the contest with 60 yards on 12 carries as well as pulling in six passes for an addi tional 46 yards. Long was Har gett’s favorite targett with seven catches for 85 yards while Har ris had five grabs for 66 yards. Aggie coach Gene Stallings said after the game that he felt that interceptions were the main difference between last season’s Cotton Bowl champions and this year’s Aggie team. Stallings said that Arkansas had a good team and that Mont gomery did a “very outstanding, excellent job against us.” Arkansas was equally lavish in their praise of the Aggies after the game.
