NYT Refuses To Take Back Agnew Blurb NEW YORK 6P) _ The New York Times was asked again Wednesday to retract editorials critical of Gov. Spiro T. Agnew, Republican vice - presidential nominee, but the paper refused, a Times official said. Harding F. Bancroft, the Times’ executive vice president, said George W. White Jr., Ag- new’s campaign manager and lawyer, stated he felt Agmew had been libelled and the Times had taken a “dishonest action.” Bancroft said he told White he disagreed. Bancroft said White did not threaten to file a libel suit. THE TIMES published one edi torial Saturday, a second Tues day and a third Wednesday crit icizing Agnew in connection with a real estate purchase and with directorship of a bank while holding office in Maryland. The Times said Agnew’s activities presented conflicts of interest and made him unfit to be vice presi dent. In its Wednesday editorial, the paper said, “The Times une quivocally rejects the charges of libel.” It said Agnew’s denial of conflict-of-interest charges “un derscores his inability to per ceive the ethical judgments de manded of persons in high posi tions of public trust.” THE TIMES said it did not accuse Agnew of violating the law, but only suggested “that he failed to act with sufficient sense of propriety in maintaining the essential distance between public office and the very possibility of any private gain that might be derived therefrom.” Agnew commented in St. Pe tersburg, Fla.: “I had a great deal of respect for the New York Times and when they came out and endorsed me for governor in 1966 I thought they had some sense.
