Walton recently approved a new constitution and elected officers. Davis Gary’s head resident Darrell Kennard reports he is satisfied with “good turn outs” at the election and a recent steak fry. He also reports hall members “seem to be participating more” in yell practices and intramural activities. Plans are underway “for com peting with other halls in other than intramural activities,” said Kennard, who is helping work out details. Earlier, resident hall advisor Howard Perry reported the pilot program spirit is “spilling over into the other halls.” Kennard estimated 75 per cent of Davis Gary Hall residents showed up at election polls. The hall has 251 students. Newly elected officers are Earl Roddy of Lancaster, president; Gordon Smyth of Houston, vice- president; Mike Tavary of Bay- town, secretary, and Harold Graves of Silsbee, treasurer. Thomas Arthur was named so cial and promotion director. Ratification of Davis Gary’s new constitution is expected “in two or three weeks,” Kennard noted. Walton Hall’s new constitution provides for a judiciary commit tee to handle the hall’s minor dis cipline programs. Similar com mittees are expected to be in cluded in constitutions for Davis Gary and Leggett. (AP Wirephoto) Yet College Move Stopped Till Nov. 1 The College of Veterinary Medicine must wait a few days to move into new quarters. Moving had been re-scheduled Oct. 15 after several earlier dates were cancelled for various rea sons. Dean A. A. Price said Monday “it may slip again,” but he is hopeful the move will take place Nov. 1. Facilities have not been completed. The dean said total occupancy of the Veterinary Medical Ad ministration Building is still ex pected by Nov. 22. The new building will include elements of pathology, parasitology, physiol ogy, and medicine and surgery. Price and his office staff will be among the first to move into new offices in the veterinary medicine complex. Of what value is an educated mind in an unsound body? Students are finding answers this fall in a new Health and Physical Education course, “Con cepts and Experiments in Physi cal Education.” The course is one of four in physical education required of A&M students during freshman and sophomore years. “In our required PE program, a student gets the physical exer cise to achieve a fairly good de gree of physical condition,” noted Dr. Carl W. Landiss. “But if he doesn’t understand why the program is required and doesn’t follow up with adequate exercise later, he can regress to the point that productiveness is CANDIDATES (Continued From Page 1) halls, between Guion Hall and the MSC, in front of Duncan Dining Hall, between the Uni versity Hospital and Henderson Hall, and in the college apart ment area. Candidates in this election are the first to follow the revised rules for campaigning. The com plete set of revisions. Passed by the Student Senate, was pub lished in the Oct. 8 Battalion. Explaining the representatives’ positions in the Student Senate, Geistweidt said, “This is the most important job in the student gov ernment. The representatives are the lifeblood of the Senate. They furnish the voice by which the students speak.” impaired,” added the department head. The concepts course, first of its kind in Texas, presents rea sons for good physical condition, proof that a physically fit person has advantage over a weaker or overweight individual and moti vation to continue working at staying in trim. Concepts of fitness, blood cir culation, heart disease, strength, low back pain, stress, obesity, smoking, skill learning and men tal health are supported with facts in theory sessions, Landiss said. “Then students go into lab and evaluate themselves through specified exercises and tests. He measures his own level and is given norms in the area.” “The student then has perso nal evidence showing the value of exercise or need of it,” Lan diss went on. A guidance session later in the course will enable students to chart their own physical condi tion and properly select required PE courses to be taken the fol lowing three semesters. Landiss, Dr. Charles Corbin and Dr. Linus J. Dowell wrote the course text, a 164-page book published by the W. C. Brown Co. of Dubuque, Iowa. It states a concept per chapter, supports each premise with facts, explains terms, outlines experiments to prove concepts and suggests ex ercises. The department head said other colleges are inquiring about the concepts course. “One other school will have something like it next fall and within five years all Texas col leges and universities will offer such a course,” Landiss predict ed. “Exercise is a lot like smok ing,” observed Corbin. “A per son can’t be told to stop smoking and just stop. Just telling some one to exercise isn’t enough. In both cases, the person must see a benefit in order to be moti vated to do it.” 1!
