Greenfield Fliers of Houston will furnish and pilot a Cessna 150 and a single-engine “Cita- borea” (aerobatic spelled back wards), a stunt plane which will also serve as towplane for the glider. The purpose of the all-day af fair, according to Harry Roberts, Flying Kadets publicity chairman, is to select two committee mem bers to represent Texas A&M in the national meet. “Two competitions, one set for 9:30 a.m. and the other for 1:30 p.m. are scheduled for the 10 pi lots participating in the meet/' Rates for the plane rides are $5 for an introductory ride in the Cessna 150, $15 per hour, the “Citaborea;” $9 per hour, the gli der. A1 Allen of Carrizo Springs, senior in Company D-l of the Corps of Cadets, was elected state treasurer. Randall Ihms and Nancy Hol land of College Station were chosen to represent the district on the state executive committee. Glen McDaniel of Dallas, A&M Young Republicans chairman, was named chairman of the state research committee. GALVESTON HELPERS Members of the Texas Maritime Academy branch of Alpha Phi Omega, the service fraternity work on a service project clean up a basketball court. Allen was appointed to the treasurer post last year and elected by acclamation at the con vention Saturday at Fort Worth. The Aggie club sent a 16-man delegation to the convention, at which Charles Chesnutt of Bee- ville was sergeant-at-arms. John Tower addressed the convention. „ _ T _ , A&M Awarded Open New Branch , F Texas A&M’s service frater nity, Alpha Phi Omega, has created both national and state wide history in the past weeks. On the national level, the A&M chapter is the first APO chapter to open a branch chapter off its main campus. The Aggies opened their branch chapter at the Tex as Maritime Academy in Galves ton. The advisors for this new branch chapter are Rear Admiral James D. Craik, U. S. Coast Guard (Ret.), superintendent of the Maritime Academy, and Al fred R. Philbrick, Jr., master of the Academy’s ship Texas Clip per and the executive officer of the Academy. Serving as presi dent of the new chapter is Ed Hamilton. Since Alpha Phi Omega is a service fraternity, the Xi Delta branch chapter has already begun a schedule of projects to benefit the school and the Maritime Academy students. Under the leadership of Ed Hamilton, the chapter has begun a campus clean-up and painting project to improve the appearance of the school. Bridge Study Ten Ag Students Named Winners Of $300 Awards Ten Texas A&M College of Ag riculture students were honored recently as winners of $300 Sears- Roebuck Foundation Scholarships. Honorees were Kenneth E. Graeher of Brenham, Larry Abel of New Braunfels, Dennis W. Brown of Roscoe; Rodney D. Clif ton of Henderson; Gerald Cren- welge of Prederickshurg, Edward L. Eason of Waxahachie, Robert J. Fikac of Shiner, Toby H. Jam- bers of Whitsett, Marvin M. Kell ner of Fort Stockton and Jose A. Spencer of Presidio. Sears officials attending were L. B. Savage of Dallas, regional director of the Foundation, and O. B- Kay, assistant manager of the Sears Store in Bryan. A&M personnel were Dr. H. O. Kunkel, dean of agriculture and acting director of the Texas Ag riculture Experiment Station; Dr. R. C- Potts, associate dean of ag riculture for instruction; Dr. Wayne C. Hall, academic vice president and dean of the Gradu ate College; and Bob Johnson, assistant director of the Student Financial Aid Office. Additionally, they have ob tained an athletic equipment lock er containing surfboards, baseball uniforms, football and basketball equipment. The Galveston branch also in tends to conduct a blood drive, similar to the one that the A&M chapter will conduct on the 24 and 25 of April. Plans for the future include helping the local Boy Scouts and Sea Explorers. A $30,000 contract for a study of highway bridge railings has been awarded to Texas A&M’s Texas Transportation Institute by the Highway Research Board in Washington. TTI Director Jack Keese said the primary objective of the project is development of a defi nition of service requirements for safe, aesthetic and economical bridge railing design. Existing bridge railing re search will be evaluated and cor related in hope of discovering engineering design requirements that will provide a basis for developing specifications to in sure the satisfactory perform ance of bridge railings, Keese ex plained.
