Page 4 College Station, Texas Wednesday, March 6, 1968 THE BATTALION Aggies Shutout By Baylor Bears, 3-0 By GARY SHERER The Aggie baseballers ran into some fine pitching, a two-run home run and rain Tuesday after noon at Waco. Put them all to gether, and Baylor tops the Aggies, 3-0. Texas Falls To TCU, 10-9 AUSTIN <-<P)—Texas Christian jammed five runs across in the fourth inning Tuesday and went on to hand Texas its second straight Southwest Conference baseball loss 10-9. The Frogs were winning their opener. It required 3 hours and 16 minutes to play the game in a rain that left only 100 hardy fans to watch. Chuck Machemehl relieved for TCU in the fourth and got stronger as the game wore on to receive credit for the decision. He allowed six hits and two runs in 5% innings. Though the drizzling rain was bothersome, Baylor southpaw John Bevil proved more of a pest as he stopped the Aggies on just four hits. The Bear senior is an old hand at shutouts over the Aggies. He threw a five-hitter at the 1967 team, 5-0 last May also at Waco. FISH hurler Doug Rau from Columbus started for the Aggies and he made a mistake at the start of the game that was his downfall. He walked the Bear leadoff man, centerfielder Mike Adams. Adams scored two outs later on a single by Bill Dykes. Dykes, the Baylor first-base man was responsible for all of Baylor’s runs as his two-run home run sealed Aggie reliefer Dave Larson’s fate in the seventh. Larson, a sophomore righthand er from Lake Jackson, came on for Rau in the third inning. Rau, also let the first man get on base in the second and third innings, and when two straight singles put men on first and second in the third, Larson appeared. AFTER retiring the side in the third without a run scoring, Larson blanked the Bears for three more innings though giving up four hits during this period. Then, Dykes sent Larson to the indoor showers, with his two-run blast. Bob Sanders finished up for the Aggies. The game was played in weath er, that before this season, would have forced a rainout. However, a new Southwest Conference rul ing makes every game a must, rain or not. Each SWC baseball team meets three times during the season. The games are split up by one single game and then back-to- back games played usually on Friday and Saturday. If, the one single game is rained out, the new ruling states that the game cannot be replayed. Thus, the game was played. AGGIE COACH Tom Chand ler’s team is now 3-2 on the year and 1-1 in the SWC. Baylor is 1-0 in the SWC (their game with Rice Saturday was rained out). Bevil was in control all the way as he walked only two and struck out seven. Double plays pulled Bevil out of any trouble he ex perienced. In the first, third and seventh innings, a twin-killing erased any chance of the Aggies getting a rally started. Bob Long, Dave Elmendorf, E*ddie Vaughn and Joe Staples were the only Aggie batters to reach Bevil for hits. Dykes, along with Rickey Head and Larry Smith all contributed two hits apiece to the Bears’ eight-hit attack. The Aggies’ next action will be Saturday afternoon at Rice. The game will start at 2:30 p.m. New Football Seating Okayed . ■ V:'# rfr? By JOHN PLATZER Not only will Kyle Field have a new look this coming football season, but student seating in the stadium is also due for some changes. With the addition of the upper deck, there will now be sufficient seats for all students and dates, making the new plan feasible. TAKING A LOOK AT AN EXPERIMENT Bert “Campy” Campaneris, Oakland Athletics infielder who led the American League with fifty-five stolen bases in 1967, holds the experimental shoe, left, alongside the con- vential shoe at spring training base at Bradenton, Fla. Campy will try the new type cleats during spring training. The shoe has been allowed for training but remains to be accepted for regular season play. (AP Wirephoto) Once a Wrangler-phile, always a Wrangler-phile. AstroFacts COCOA, Fla. — For the first time in their history, the Houston Astros may go to a four-man pitching rotation in 1968. Six pitchers, evenly divided be tween lefthanders and righthand ers, are in a spring training scrap for the starting jobs. They include lefties Wade Blas- ingame, Mike Cuellar and Denny Lemaster, plus righthanders Lar ry Dierker, Dave Giusti and Don Wilson. Houston previously has used five starting pitchers during each of its six years in the National League, but an unusual schedule during the early part of ’68 may change the staff’s setup. “Because of so few double- headers and so many days off early in the season, we’re think ing about making the change,” Manager Grady Hatton said. All it takes is one pair of Wrangler® Jeans and you’re a Wrangler-phile for life. The fit. The feel. The lean and easy look. Only Wrangler jeans have it. And Wrangler® sportswear has the same thing. Because it’s made the same great way. Here, a fine example of Wrangler-ism in an ivy button down shirt and gold glen plaid slacks. Both are permanent press with a soil release finish. Slacks, $8. Other sections in the lower deck will be made up according to the student’s junior, sophomore of freshman classification. A totally new portion of the plan will be the printing of tick ets, containing section and seat numbers, for the student areas. Tickets will be distributed a week prior to each home game on the following schedule: gradu ates on Wednesday, seniors on Thursday, juniors on Friday, sophomores on Monday, freshmen on Tuesday and all who have not previously picked up tickets on Wednesday befox^e the game. I.D. AND ACITIVITY cards will be the only criteria students will need for obtaining their al lotment of two tickets, one stu dent and one date, in his assigned section. If tickets in a section should not be picked up by the end of their distribution day, they will be available to the remaining students the following days. No student will be allowed to pick up tickets for any other student or any student organiza tion. If students desire to sit together at a particular game WOULD YOU BELIEVE THE KENTUCKY DERBY? Annabelle the Wonder Horse, a three-year-old flop-eared filly that started its racing career on Ontario tracks last year as a gag by its owners, two newspapermen, has bees accepted as an entry in the May 4 running of the Kentucky Derby. She won $200 last year and is quoted at 5,00 tol odds for the Derby. (AP Photo) they will have to go to the distri bution point together for their tickets. WOMEN STUDENTS will be permitted to sit with their hus bands in the section of his classi fication. This is when both hus band and wife ax - e students or when just the husband is a stu dent. The new seating arrangement was signed by Jerry Campbet president of the Student Senat* and Neal Adams, head yell leader The plan was passed by tie senate with the hope that would end the confusion surrouni ing seating at past games. Itwai also hoped that it would assure each student a seat in the proper section according to his classifr cation. — BATTALION CLASSIFIED Political Announcements Subject to action of the Dem ocratic Primary May 4, 1968.
