WHITE SAIGON — North Viet namese troops shelled Khe Sanh heavily Thursday and probed out posts of that U. S. Marine base in what could be the all-out Com munist offensive by which Hanoi hopes to take over South Viet nam’s northern provinces. The fall of the U. S. Special Forces camp at Lang Vei, three miles west of Khe Sanh, had opened a gateway from Laos through which the North Viet namese could more easily push in men and supplies to bolster elements of two Red divisions that already ringed Khe Sanh. The Marines counterattacked and, with heavy artillery and air support, drove them off the hill. Enemy detachments still held out in Saigon, Hue, Dalat and Can Tho in the battle of the cities, launched by the Viet Cong Jan. 30, as the enemy threat loomed in the north. The U. S. Command, building up its forces toward the 525,000 mark, disclosed 500,200 American servicemen were in Vietnam as of last Saturday. Replacements were more than making up for recent record losses. SPOKESMEN reported 15,515 of the enemy, 84 South Vietna mese and 416 Americans were killed in combat last week, in each case surpassing previous highs. The American wounded totaled 2,757. American losses in combat since 1961 rose to 17,296 killed, 108,428 wounded and 997 missing or captured. The dead in all totaled 20,613, for 3,317 have succumbed from illness, accidents and other nonhostile causes. Fighting continued around Saigon, seat of the government the Viet Cong seeks to overthrow. Police said only three of the cap ital’s nine districts, the heart of the city, are considered secure. New casualties poured from the other districts into overcrowded hospitals. GUERRILLAS CLUNG to 20 square blocks of Cholon, the Chi nese quarter, and fought from vil lage to village just north of the city. Columns of smoke marked burning homes. A full battalion of the enemy—about 400 men— was reported still operating as a unit near the racetrack at the western edge of Saigon. U. S. spokesmen reported two clashes between government rangers and Viet Cong late Thursday in Cholon, one near a big American military billet and the other near a hotel that houses U. S. civilians. A bullet wounded one American civilian. SEVERAL fires burned in Cho lon, lighting up the night sky with an orange glow topped by a tower of black smoke. Explosions shook buildings, but they were re ported to have been allied artil lery pieces firing at targets in the fringes of the capital. ETVTapesKids ForEd.Program CHANNEL TOUR PLANNING Participants of a Corps of Engineer Short Course at Texas A&M will tour the Houston ship channel Saturday. A Civil Engineering Department model of the industrial waterway allows close visual planning of the 50-man group’s itinerary. Studying the environmental engineering division model are (1. to r.) Dr. Roy W. Hann Jr., director, and Dr. William B. Davis of A&M; Pete Boyer, water quality section chief, North Pacific Division, Corps of Engineers; John Clark, New Mexico State distinguished professor, and Bill S. Eichert, assistant chief of the corps’ Hydrological Engi neering Center, Sacramento. The model, built to show the entire ship channel area, depicts contour from Magnolia to the Gulf side of Morgan’s Point. The San Jacinto monu ment is behind Dr. Hann’s hand. Texas A&M’s Educational Tele vision Department hitched up its mobile video-tape unit Thursday for on-site shooting at Bryan’s Crockett Elementary School. ETV Associate Producer Nor man Godwin said playground scenes at the Bryan school will be used to introduce a 30-minute program illustrating exemplary practices in early childhood edu cation. The program, entitled “A Hap py Start,” is aimed at parents of pre-school children and will be aired in several Texas cities after an initial showing in Lufkin Feb. 13. Godwin said the program is part of “Project RA-TOD” (Re search Application — Techniques of Dissemination), a $50,000 fed erally-funded study being con ducted by the Lufkin Independent School District and Texas A&M, in cooperation with the Texas Education Agency. Dr. Roger Harrell, assistant professor of education at A&M, is project director. Segments of the program show ing parents and pre-school chil dren were taped earlier in the ETV campus studios.
