Centenary College of Shreve port, La. handed the Aggies their NOW OPEN SCHERTLE’S GALLERIES of Bryan Original Oil Paintings 2016 TEXAS AVENUE BRYAN, TEXAS 77801 PHONE 822-4317 seventh loss of the year Monday night at Shreveport. The 99-93 defeat completed the Aggies’ non conference slate, as the Maroon and White finished at 6-4 in non- SWC games. Saturday night’s opponents pre sent a problem for the 8-7 Ag gies. The Bears of Waco currently top the SWC standings with a 4-1 record. The Aggies at 2-3 must win this game in order to stay alive in title consideration. Since 1915, there has only been four times that a SWC champ has taken the basketball crown with over three losses. The most recent of these came in 1965 when Southern Methodist started its two-year string of championships. Baylor is led by sophomore David Sibley from Houston with a 15.2 average. Possibly the big gest threat in the Bear attack is 6-4 forward Tommy Bowman, who jumps like he was 6-8 and more. Aggie Coach Shelby Metcalf feels that the sophomore-of-the- year will be either Bowman or Arkansas’ Robert McKenzie. Baylor Coach Bill Menefee has upset the SWC prediction apple cart by guiding his Bears to their present 10-3 status. All the con ference scribes picked Baylor to finish last in the conference be fore the season started back in December. k Church..For a Fuller Life..For You.. CALENDAR OF CHURCH SERVICES ST. Fifteen years from now—or twenty—do you think he’ll be president of the company? We haven’t the slightest idea. All we know is that, right now, he’s on the way up. Many things determine a man’s potential for positions of re sponsibility and trust; one of them is character. Character isn’t easy to define—it is much easier to recognize. This man goes to church every Sunday . . . not because he is seeking character . . . but because he is seeking God. And the people who know him best figure that is one of the clearest marks of his character. Copyright 1968 Keister Advertising Service, Inc., Strasburg, Va. Hardy graduated and Turner had scholastic prob lems. So Menefee has fashioned this success with a lack of experienced hands. The seasoned performers on this year’s team are Russell Kibbe, Bob Porter and Steve Bar tels. The results of this combina tion of brand new and semi-old has surprised the SWC. Tuesday night, Baylor topped Rice at Waco and with Texas Christian’s loss to Arkansas, broke a three-way tie for the lead between the Owls, Frogs and Bears. Now, Baylor sits atop the heap as they prepare for their trip to College Station. The Aggies, as mentioned, need this game. Like their football counterparts, their backs are against the wall as the race for the SWC laurel# gets tighter. The football team won all of their remaining conference games and it looks like Metcalf’s charges will have to do the same. “Its like playing poker without any money,” Metcalf says when discussing the Aggies’ title hopes. Monday night, the Aggies ran into a hot-shooting Centenary crew and went down to a 99-93 defeat. It was the third win of the year for Centenary who had had a less then successful 2-13 record before the win over the Aggies. The Gentleman shot at a 53 percent pace while the Aggies hit at a 48.0 norm. Before this game, Centenary had averaged just over 40 percent for their 15 previous games. RONNIE PERET Tops Aggie scoring stats. Billy Bob Barnett and Ronnie Peret led the Aggies’ attack with 61 points between them. Barnett’s 32 points was his varsity career high. It was one of those nights, when Centenary couldn’t miss and the Aggies couldn’t make enough. ★ ★ ★ Coach Metcalf hopes that Sat urday night will produce a packed G. Rollie White Coliseum for the Baylor-A&M match. Captain Terry Trip pet ex pressed the views of the team and himself this way, “if the stu dent body packs the stands, I’ll guarantee them a victory.” Trip- pet is the right one to speak of victory over Baylor as it was his last second shot that beat the Bears at College Station last sea son.
