What Riggs He Makes Up Lacks For In In Size, Points Page 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, November 16, 1967 Charlie Riggs of Galena Park is living proof of Coach Gene Stal lings’ philosophy that “size is relatively unimportant in college football.” Riggs stands all of 5-7 if he stretches and weighs nearly 160. Those dimensions aren’t over whelming, even by high school standards, but don’t be fooled and underestimate Riggs because of his size. Charlie led Galena Park to the state finals his senior year when he was captain and quarterback, a position to which he was named on the All-State team. Riggs had made good on 14 of 17 extra point kicks and has hit on 5 of 6 field goal tries. He is the team’s third high scorer with 29 points. The A&M one-game rec ord for field goals is two. Riggs this season twice has equalled the record, first against Purdue and later against Florida State. He now shares the record with Joel Hunt and Mike Clark. Riggs, as a quarterback, is a scrambler who has that enviable knack of being able to move his team toward the foes’ goal. He’s a tough little hustler who has kept Edd Hargett working hard to keep the No. 1 position for the Aggies. His kicking could be an impor tant factor this week if past Aggie-Rice games can be used as measuring sticks. The son of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Riggs of Galena Park, Charlie is a physical educational major who plans on coaching after he leaves Texas A&M. THE BATTALIC BAIT PICKS CHARLIE RIGGS Aggie recruiters didn’t worry about his size. In their view he was what is termed a “winner.” They haven’t changed their esti mations one bit since. Adami Studies Real Hard, Both Books And Football When he came to Aggieland he was noted for his passing more than anything. But, today, he is making a name as a placement kicker in addition to being the backup quarterback to Edd Har gett. If you’re looking for a combin ation of high academic excellence and rugged football excellence, make a close study of Buster Adami, a starting linebacker for the Texas Aggies this year. In eight games this season, Adami and his running mate, Bill Hobbs, from one of the very DEADLINE - DEC. 1 Last Chance! ALL FRESHMEN CLASS PICTURES FOR YEARBOOK UNIVERSITY STUDIO ATTENTION ! ! Building. best linebacking tandems in col lege football. They are averag ing about 20 tackles each per game. Adami was held out of action last year after having won a freshman numeral. The extra year of seasoning was just what he needed. The square-shouldered, 6-1, 200-pounder, is a highly in telligent youngster who retains what he is taught and he came on fast in the spring. He continued so well this fall that Stallings was able to move mmmm ■ linebacker Robert Cortez, a two- year veteran at the position, to offensive guard because he knew Adami could take care of the linebacking post. At Freer High School, Adami was a solid football player and perhaps an even more solid stu dent. He was president of Freer High’s National Honor Society and valedictorian of his graduat ing class. He has won Distin guished Student honors since ar riving at Aggieland. Not one who stands out espe cially in a crowd, Adami is a steady hand on the Aggie defen sive unit and seems to get better as he gains experience. Either his number 60 or Hobbs’ 55 is in on virtually every tackle when the foes run with the football. A sophomore in eligibility, Bus ter has two more seasons to back up the line for the Aggies. He is majoring in Government and plans to attend Law School after he is graduated from Texas A&M. The Cadets kept their string of victories over Texas extending back 35 years intact with a eight- point second half surge which wiped out the 7-6 lead which the Longhorn swimmers had at half time. Texas scored first and had two goals on the board before the Aggies rallied. The Ags tied the score at 5-5midway in the second quarter and the game seesawed until A&M took a 9-8 edge in the third quarter. The Aggies then slammed four- quick goals into the net to in crease their lead to 13-9. The Horns were held to only two points in the fourth quarter as the Aggies stressed defense and nursed their lead with one addi tional point. In the “B” game the Aggies bombed the Texas “B” squad 11-5.
