So will a lot of film, unless amateur shut- terbugs consider a few picture taking principles. Daytime snapshots of various phases of construction of the 1967 Aggie Bonfire are just like back yard and beach scenes. A steady camera and gentle release of the shutter will get sharp, clear pic tures in most fixed focus, box- type cameras. Picture takers tend to handle a camera like A&M students work the logs, axes and other equip ment in building the annual fire. Yell leaders will light the sym bolic stack at 8 p.m. Nov. 22. Pictures of the fire from that point on involve a little more than dividing the camera-to-bonfire distance into a flash bulb guide number for an f-stop and blasting away. Several methods are available to get a good photo that will properly portray the annual pre- Thanksgiving game blaze, into which considerable detailed plan ning and thousands of student- hours of work has gone. The person who plans to be on the drill field to take a picture has two choices. He can fall back away from the heat when the fire is started, as will thousands of others, finally get settled and, raising the camera high overhead, snap a picture on which the image of the fire itself occupies only a small central portion of the photo. Or, if the photog can stand some heat, he can remain as close as possible until the fire is burn ing. By snapping the picture then, more of the viewfinder—and pic ture—will be filled with the im age of the fire. The picture should be made BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES 0n« day 3* P< ■r wo Minir 4^ per word rd each additional d mum charge—50<i FOR SALE GARAGE SALE ! Holiday evening gowns, sizes 8-14. Main 822-6000 within a minute or so of the start of the blaze. Once kerosene with which the stack is soaked has been consumed, the light level drops due to logs burning at a lower temperature.'Most box cam eras operate near l/30th second and f8, adequate exposure for a closeup picture. Owners of more expensive, var iable aperture cameras have sev eral avenues of bonfire picture making open to them. A time ex posure from a tripod gives un usual effects, accumulating light on film so that details around the bonfire show up. Prolonged exposures after the fire is lit will show it only as a blob of light. Black-and-white film allows darkroom magic to circumvent this. One negative can be exposed at l/25th to l/60th second to record the stack and flames. Another negative ex posed 30 seconds to two minutes will properly expose the crowd and surrounding details. A montage print using both negatives produces a clear pic ture of both the fire and back ground. The best bonfire pictm*es are made this way. Mechanical Engineering (B), Pet roleum Engineering (B).
