By VANCY MANNING Battalion Staff Writer “Exciting but lonely” is how Mrs. Ruth Ann Stallings, wife of Gene Stallings, describes life as a football coach’s wife. “I have always enjoyed foot ball,” she said. Football has always been a part of her life because she has two older brothers who played college football. The first time she saw A&M was while she was dating Coach Stallings. “I thought it was one of the greatest institutions I had ever seen,” she said. “Of course Gene looked very impressive in his senior boots,” she added smiling. “All the traditions at A&M make it the unusual place that it is. The Spirit of Aggieland really does mean a great deal to the students,” Mrs. Stallings continued. “I live football,” she said. She and Coach Stallings were married on the Saturday after A&M beat Texas in Memorial Stadium for the first time. “We had a very happy wed ding,” she recalled. “Members of MRS. Mrs. Stallings attends all homt games and travels with the team to many of the out of towi games. If she does not go will them, she always listens to the game. On days of home games, she entertains out-of-town guests and other friends who drop by. The East Texas State graduate taught school for one year is Bryan before she and Coach Stall ings moved to Alabama. While in Alabama she taught shool for one year and was prin cipal of a private school for a year. “We were very happy to come back to A&M,” she recalled. “It was what we had both hoped for.” So far, this season has been a heartbreaker for the Aggies with the last minute losses. “It really hurts to lose a game in the last minute,” Mrs. Stallings said. “If you know earlier in the game that you aren’t going to win, it’s not so bad,” she con tinued. “Scoring in the last minute of the Texas Tech game made the win doubly sweet,” she added. Giants-Packers Top NFL Stats NEW YORK UP)—If statistics tell the story, the best offense in the National Football League will be taking on the best defense in the league Sunday when Fran Tarkenton and his New York Giants mates bump up against Ray Nitschke and friends of the Green Bay Packers. The Giants’ attack, which in cluded some improvisations from the public school No. 97 playbook in a triumph oyer Pittsburgh, has averaged 407 yards a game, tops in the NFL. The Giants’ passing game has averaged 273 yards, second only to Baltimore and their running game is fifth with a 133- yard average. The Los Angeles Rams have the best rushing aver age of 154 yards. Green Bay has been so tough to score on that it is difficult to see how the Packers have lost a game. In five games the Packers have given up only 54 points or 10.8 a game. Of the 54 points, 44 have followed Packer mistakes such as pass interceptions fumbles. Actually, the Green Bay defense has given up only 10 true points and three of those followed an onside kickoff recovery. The grudging Packer defense has given up only 151 yards game. The pass defense is tight that the enemy has aver aged just 32.6 yards a game, shiny target for Tarkenton and Homer Jones. Dallas has the best defense against rushing with an average yield of 73 yards. The Packers are eighth in that cate gory.
