Page 2 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Thursday, September 21, 1967 Letter To Joe (Editor’s Note: The following letter was written this week by a member of the Class of 1960 to his younger brother, a freshman in the Cadet Corps. The fish con sidered it an inspiriation and offered it for reprinting in the hope that others could benefit from it.) Connally Plans No Trip Yet To Gulf Coast CADET SLOUCH by Jim Earle Dear Joe After visiting with you this past weekend, I have re called numerous memories from eleven years ago. I know just how you feel. College life and the associated studies are a large tran sition in themselves. Combining this with the discipline and different life imposed by the Corps of Cadets further com plicates the transition from “High School Harry” to “Aggie.” Joe, it separates the men from the boys. A&M University and especially the Aggie Fraternity want only men to wear “the ring” and receive an Aggie diploma. T’m sure you are questioning many of the restrictions, rules, etc. you are being forced to abide. Most of these, Joe, have a very definite purpose. Before a person can effec tively give orders and lead, he must learn to follow orders. I would be a fool not to recognize the fact that some of the requirements are not oriented in that direction. But even so, these, too, are a test of you — a test to determine what you are made of — degree of intestinanl fortitude, ability to withstand pressure, both mental and physical, intelli gence, and mental agility. You can learn a tremendous amount about yourself during this year. Joe, it wasn’t meant to be easy. People can attend college elsewhere, wear what they desire, do as they please and worry about nothing but their grades. But Aggieland is much more, Joe. It is much more of a challenge. You will not only be tested in your academic area, but you will be tested almost continuously in the Corps. This pressure will teach you more than you can learn in any class or from any book. You will learn to reach people, understand them better and work with them. These first few weeks are probably the worst. You have so many things on your mind, so many things to do and so many things to remember that at times the situa tion might seem impossible. Just remember that thousands of men before you have gone through the same thing, and came out of it much better men and Aggies. Joe, I have no doubt that you can do it — just suck in your guts, keep your head out and do your best. Beat the Hell out of Purdue! Bob AUSTIN (A*)—Gov. John Con nally, keeping- in constant touch with the devastation wrought by Hurricane Beulah, said Wednes day he does not plan to visit the hurricane area “until I think it would be helpful in trying to al leviate some of the problems.” He told a news conference in the Division of Defense and Dis aster Relief’s underground emer gency operating center that he thinks there “is no question” but Texas will need federal funds to get stricken communities back to normal. BUT, HE ADDED, no applica tion for small Business Adminis tration funds, used to restore public facilities, would be made until damage has been assessed and applicable laws checked. Connally spent all day Tues day at the operating center, and was back at 7 a.m. Wednesday for another full day. President Johnson “has mani fested a very personal interest” in what Beulah does to Texas, said Connally. While lines have been kept open to the White House in case Connally thinks the hurricane zone should be de clared a disaster area, the gov ernor said he has not talked personally with Johnson. Coulter Dr. Bryan 22 Texas Tech Girls Injured In Early-Morning Dorm Fire LUBBOCK </P>—Fire damaged one wing of an $11 million new three-dormitory complex at Tex as Tech early Wednesday, send ing 22 women students to hospi tals with minor injuries. The dormitories, one for men and two for women, were opened only this week. Fire broke out on the 12th floor of a women’s dormitory where the coeds were reportedly holding “wind meet ings,” talk sessions. Believing staircases and eleva tors blocked, some of the girls took refuge in rooms near the fire and were overcome by smoke, firemen said. Some had minor cuts. Some girls panicked, fire men said, and piled matresses against doors instead of leaving. Others in the dormitory were evacuated safely, a college spokesman said, and were spend ing the night in housing facilities on the campus. The dormitories resemble slick, modernistic motels and for the most part are fire-proof. Appar ently the blaze fed on carpetings and furnishings. One room and part of a stair way were heavily damaged by the fire. Club Applications Sought At MSC Applications for meeting rooms for students organiza tions and clubs for the fall se mester will be accepted in the Social and Educational Office starting at 8:00 a.m. Friday, September 22. An intermediate level German language textbook prepared by Dr. Edward C. Breitenkamp of Texas A&M University will be published by Prentice-Hall later this month. “Thelma: Deutschland” will be a 300-page book containing non fiction articles from German periodicals. “The idea is to provide a total picture of Germany today in a language textbook,” Breitenkamp said. “The selected articles deal with sports, young people and their problems, Soviet espionage, modern literature, reviews of jokes representing the under ground during the Hitler period and East Germany.” The format is similar to a pa perback text Breitenkamp printed on a home press four years ago. The professor has been with the Modern Languages Depart ment faculty 14 years. The Texas Foreign Language Association and American Association of Teachers of German member re ceived degrees at Drake and the Ph.D. at State University of Iowa in 1951.
