Space Center Complex Dedicated To Teague Graduate research program de velopment in the Chemistry De partment has taken its first step with planning of new research facilities and appointment of 13 new faculty members, announced Dr. Arthur E. Martell, head. New appointments include: —Dr. Thomas T. Sugihara, professor; B.A., Kalamazoo Col lege; Ph.D., Chicago. The former Clark University chemistry de partment chairman specializes in nuclear fission and spectroscopy. —Dr. Herman A. Liebhafsky, professor; B.S., Texas A&M, 1926; Ph.D., California, Berkeley; formerly research director 17 years with General Electric; spe cializes in fuel cells, electro chemistry, energy conversion and X-ray analysis. —Dr. Donald D. Macfarlane, professor; University of Buffalo; Ph.D., Carnegie Tech; comes to A&M from McMaster University, Ontario, faculty; research inter ests included properties of highly- excited nuclear states, nuclear reactions of heavy ions and alpha particle and proton decay spectro scopy. —Dr. Joe S. Ham, professor with joint appointment as physics professor; bachelor and doctoral degrees, Chicago; specialty, chem ical physics of high polymers. —Dr. Daniel H. O’Brien, asso ciate professor; bachelor and doc toral degrees, University of Vir ginia; from Western Reserve University; has worked in nu clear magnetic resonance studies. —Dr. Alan S. Webb called the research center “unique in the United States and cited Texas A&M University as looking to problems at home.” “The University recognizes its commitment to increase the cap ability of men,” he said. “The mind of man will be expanded for useful purposes.” Webb reiterated that the NASA budget cut gives Russia an oppor tunity to achieve the lead in the race to the moon and other big load space projects. He cited the federal debt, “war in Vietnam and troubles in our cities” as respon sible for the reduced NASA funds. “No new programs will be started by NASA,” he said. “But in the meantime, Texas A&M University through this research facility will be gathering informa tion for future programs.” Webb predicted the new re search complex will attract “able men” to the University. He saw the research as “a promise of future power” to re strain nations which would “dis turb the stability of the world.” Astronauts D. K. Slayton, Charles Conrad Jr. and Richard F. Gordon joined the two high NASA officials in the dedication ceremonies. The astronauts as sisted A&M President Earl Rud der in unveiling the building marker bearing the name of “Olin E. Teague Research Center.” Other program participants in cluded H. C. Heldenfels of Corpus Christ!, president of the Texas A&M Universtiy System Board of Directors; and Texas A&M Engi neering Dean Fred Benson. Spe cial guests included Congressmen Robert Casey and Graham Pur cell.
