Phil- brick Jr. has been promoted to captain and named commanding officer of the academy’s training ship, the “Texas Clipper,” an nounced Capt. Bennett M. Dodson, TMA superintendent. Captain Philbrick joined the TMA staff in February after serving nine years as executive officer at the Maine Maritime Academy. In addition to serving as TMA executive officer, Philbrick is head of the Department of Marine Transportation and commandant of midshipmen. He also served as executive officer of the “Texas Clipper” during its recent cruise to South America. The 37-year-old naval officer was graduated from the Maine Maritime Academy with a B.S. degree in 1950. He later served in various licensed positions with Farrell Lines, Inc. of New York and was operations officer and navigator for the USS Graffias with the U. S. Seventh Fleet dur ing the Korean War. Captain Philbrick earned his unlimited Master’s license in 1960. He has been a member of the U. S. Naval Reserve 17 years and currently holds the rank of com mander. He is a member of the Inter national Marine Association of London and the Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Gal veston. The Texas Maritime Academy, youngest of the nation’s five maritime academies, prepares young men for careers as licensed officers in the merchant marine. It also offers them opportunities for commission in the Navy or Coast Guard. Courses offered at the Galves ton school lead to B.S. degrees in either marine transportation or marine engineering. The 15,000-ton vessel which Philbrick will command is the former luxury passenger-cargo ship, SS Excambion. It now serves as a floating classroom and visits various ports around the world during TMA’s annual summer cruise period. Peirce Collection To Be Published A collection of short stories by J. F.
