On the sidelines, Coach Gene Stallings of the Aggies nervously paced back and forth. Suddenly, there was a tug at his arm and a voice saying, “Coach, let me go in there. I can stop that passer.” The speaker was big Maurice (Mo) Moorman, an offensive tackle of tremendous dimensions (6-5, 251) and equally tremen dous talent. Stallings waved him uneasily on Moorman’s head after the season. “I didn’t play as well as I should have,” he contended. Last spring he was shifted to guard to make room for Rolf Krueger at Moorman’s old tackle slot. At the close of spring drills Stallings said: “Moorman im proved more than any player we had during spring training.” He continued his improved play this fall. Nothing short of a crip pling injury can keep Moorman from repeating as an all-America in 1967. Moments later Baylor had fourth-and-nine at the A&M 22 and Southall, always an accurate and dangerous passer, was fading back. He had a big blocker in front for protection. The on- charging Moorman drove the blocker back, reached over him and clamped Southall with the sweetest “Bear Hug” Aggies had seen in years. It was a nine-yard loss and A&M took over on the 31 to run out the clock. That play, many contend, made Moorman an All-America. He was first-team choice on Look Maga zine (selected by the Football Writers of America), The Sport ing News (selected by pro scouts from both the NFL and the AFL) and The New York Daily News. Too, he was an all-SWC selection. The all-America laurels rested Fry To Begin Sixth Season Against A&M (Editor’s Note: The following is a reprint of an article in the Dallas Morning News of Wednes day, Sept. 13 by the News’ sports- writer Harless Wade.) John Hayden Fry, with the gnawing hunger for his first Southwest Conference title satis fied, officially opens his sixth season as head coach at SMU this Saturday. It starts at College Station when he sends his Mustangs against Gene Stallings’ favored Texas Aggies. Where it will end, nobody is quite sure, although few visualize a post-season game for the Ponies. However, few visualized Fry’s Mustangs as Cotton Bowl con tenders at this same time last year. And none dreamed of such Mustang feats in his other four seasons on the Methodist campus. Just how much the 1966 suc cess will affect play in 1967 must remain unanswered for the time being, but this should be a sig nificant season for the SMU coach. For one thing, Fry becomes the first coach since Matty Bell (1935-41) to last more than five consecutive seasons on the Hill top. And, other than Bell, only pioneer Mustang coach Ray Mor rison (1922-34) can make such a statement. Five others have failed. Certainly, Fry faces an up coming season that could do much to seal his success as a coach. In a year when just about every one views his Mustangs as drop- ing into the SWC cellar, a vintage season would certainly KO all but the most unreasonable critics. Low Prices Every Day! Velkay—3-Lb.
