Luther Named To Head Math Dr. Herbert A. Luther, a mem ber of A&M’s Mathematics De partment since 1937, has been named acting head of the depart ment. Luther’s appointment was an nounced by College of Science Dean Clarence Zener. He replaces Dr. Morris Ostrofsky who re signed recently to join the West- inghouse Electric Corporation, Baltimore, Md. A full professor since 1947, Luther has chaired a number of Ph.D. and master’s committees. Currently, he is conducting re search in mathematics for the National Aeornautics and Space Administration. Dr. Luther is the author of a book, “Applied Numerical Meth ods,” written in cooperation with two University of Michigan en gineers. He has published numer ous technical papers. Luther earned Ph.D. and M.S. degrees at the State University of Iowa. He also has a B.A. degree from the University of Pittsburgh and attended two summer computer schools at the University of Oklahoma. The professor’s professional and academic memberships in clude the Mathematical Associa tion of America, Association for Computing Machinery, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathe matics, Texas Academy of Sci ence (Fellow), American Associ ation for the Advancement of Science, Phi Kappa Phi and Sig ma Xi. He is currently vice- chairman of the Texas Section of the Mathematical Association of America. Luther’s experience also in cludes one year as a research engineer for Westinghouse Re search Laboratories and a sum mer as a research economist for the Texas Transportation Insti tute. The Luther family lives at 614 Welch Avenue, College Station. Koontz To Speak At Conference Education of culturally-deprived Texas A&M Monday by one of the nation’s highest ranking elected education officials. Mrs. Elizabeth D. Koontz, Na tional Education Association pres ident-elect, will speak Monday during a two-day visit to address sessions of a state-wide institute for directors of Title I federal programs. Mrs. Koontz’ 7:30 p.m. presen tation, “The Teacher is the Key,” will be in the Architecture audi torium, announced Dr. Paul Hen- sarling, A&M Education and Psychology Department head. She is a special education teacher at Salisbury, N. C., and has served in several official NEA capacities. Mrs. Koontz taught several years in North Carolina schools, serves on a presidential National Advisory Council and has attended over seas educational conferences. Hensarling said her Monday lecture is aimed specifically for area school people and that the public is invited. MRS. ELIZABETH KOONTZ Tractor Kills Waco Youth WACO—John Barnett, 17-year- old Waco youth participating in a Neighborhood Youth Corps pro gram at James Connally Techni cal Institute, was fatally injured Wednesday afternoon when the tractor he was riding hit a wall and overturned on him. The youth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe P. Barnett of 3709 Leland, Waco, was enrolled in a welding class at Connally Tech. Robert M. Stillman, associate director of the institute, said the accident occurred in a hanger about 12:45 p.m. while the stu dents and instructors were on a lunch break.
