A&M Recipient Of $1,000 Check Firemen’s School THE BATTALION Page 4 College Station, Texas Thursday, July 13,155; A $1,000 check for use in any manner deemed appropriate was presented to Texas A&M recently by the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce. Chamber President J. B. (Dick) Hervey formally presented the contribution during brief cere monies in the office of A&M President Earl Rudder. Begins On Monday Rudder said the funds will be used to help “tell the A&M story” throughout the state. A&M GETS CHECK Bryan-Colleg-e Station Chamber of Commerce President J. B. (Dick) Hervey (left) presented a $1,000 check to Texas A&M President Earl Rudder. Hervey noted the $1,000 check is the first of three university contributions budgeted by the chamber this year. The local organization of mer chants and businessmen has made similar contributions to A&M for several years. Trial runs of fires at Brayton Training Field Friday will in volve 60 instructors of the 38th Texas Firemen’s Training School opening Monday at Texas A&M. Henry D. Smith, firemen’s training chief for the A&M En gineering Extension Service, said instructors will check out each of the field problems to determine that everything is working prop erly. Among the fires are houses, butane tanks, overhead storage tanks, pit and tank, tank and dike, and airplane. Most of the instructors are fire chiefs and fire marshals from Texas. Technical specialists come from as far away as New York. Fallout Theater Presents Comedy Production Tonik Other instructors will arrive Saturday and Sunday for orien tation meetings before the school gets into full swing Monday. Smith said 290 instructors will comprise the staff for the munici pal school Monday through Fri day. A public firefighting demon stration is planned for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the training field. State and local government offi cials also will witness the demon stration. The industrial fire protection school is slated July 23-28. An adult comedy, “Under the Sycamore Tree,” opens tonight for a three-night run at Texas A&M University’s Fallout Thea ter. Presented by the Premier Play ers, a production group of 15 to 18 year olds in Bryan and College Station, the three-act play in volves a group of ants with the attributes of man. “It’s a satire on man’s foolish ness,” director Bob Wenck, A&M English instructor, said. “The play is constructive as well as funny. Man’s history and aspir ations are made to seem worth while.” Supervised by Aggie Players “Under the Sycamore Tree” is at | for 8 p.m. curtain time. Written by Samuel Spewacl, the play takes place in the thro® room of an ant hill in a pasture under the sycamore tree. The cast includes Brodie Pate, an announcer; Heather Gaines, the general; Scott Wilson, a sei- entist; David Alsmeyer, statisti cian; Becky Upham, queen; Wan- da Wolf, brown ant; Judy Elm. quist, girl ant; Jim Collins, boy ant, and Bill Smith and Richani Stewart, worker ants.
