TAKE HOME A MEMENTO Sports Aplenty It Was A Good Year By GARY SHERER It was a good year. In fact, to borrow the words of the song, “it was a very good year” in sports at Aggieland. Granted, there were some losses and heartbreaks but all-in-all, sports took an upward swing in 1966-67 at Texas A&M. A few cases in point; the best season football record since 1961, a fourth-place finish in the Southwest Confer ence baseball race when the Aggie nine was picked for last, a sophomore-laden basketball team that will be heard from in the future, the SWC Golf champions and prob ably the most famous part of A&M sports, a world-record holding shot-putter. In looking back over the past nine months of sports, many good . . . and bad thoughts come to mind. I would like to catagorize some of the most exciting from this writer’s point of view. 1. Seeing Randy Matson break his own world shot- put record at College Station on April 22. 2. Watching the Aggie football team take the SWC lead as they won three straight in conference play. 3. Seeing Mo Moorman and Rolf Krueger making crucial tackles in the closing minute of the Baylor and Rice games. 4. Being there to see Terry Trippet sink a final sec onds basket to beat the Baylor Bears. 5. Watching the Aggie basketball team beat Texas. 6. Suffering through the Texas Christian baseball game when the Aggie nine stranded 17 men. 8. Watching the development of a good football team at spring training. There are many other things I could mention, but I would like to borrow the “T” Associations spring game slogan to sum up this sports year. PAUL-MINNEAPOLIS <SP> — Tommy McCraw smashed three home runs and drove in eight runs Wednesday as the usually weak-hitting Chicago White Sox bombarded the Minnea- sota Twins with 21 hits in a 14-1 rout. The Sox broke Dean Chance’s seven-game winning streak in re suming first place behind Gary Peters’ six-hit pitching. Peters collected three hits, in cluding a ninth-inning homer off Jim Kaat, the third Minnesota pitcher.
