C & D SALVAGE CO. 32nd & S. Tabor Streeta — Bryan A future Thailand Army officer is training at Texas A&M as a member of the Corps of Cadets. Veerapun Putamanonda, nick named Tom by his associates in Company D-l, is majoring in mechanical engineering and studying A&M’s ROTC pro gram. He is one of six Thailand students at A&M. Tom’s father is General Thanom Putamanonda, Chief of Staff chairman of the Thailand military establishment. Tom was born and raised in Bangkok and grew up in the regimented surroundings of the military. General Putamanonda is a former professor of military sci ence at the Thailand Army Acad emy. THE A&M SOPHOMORE is a graduate of the Bangkok Armed Forces Academy, a prep school for the U.S.-sympathetic Southeast Asian nation’s Army, Air Force and Navy Academies. Putamanonda is under Thai Army contract and scholarship at A&M. On graduation, he will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the Thailand Army which he plans to make his career. Tom transferred to A&M from Norwich University because of the salesmanship of his general father, a cousin and Walter Dab ney of Dallas, his roommate. “My father told me about A&M,” the quiet-spoken cadet re marked. “I also have a cousin who attended A&M.” “I met Walter in Washington, D. C. He told me more about the university, its engineering and military programs. I became con vinced I wanted to study here,” the dark-haired young man added. TOM, 22, WAS “adopted” by Dabney’s family. Walter’s fa ther, John W. Smylie, 2712 Lov ers Lane, Dallas, is a 1944 A&M graduate in electrical engineering. Walter, a recreation and parks major, also has a younger brother, Reynolds Dabney, attending A&M. He’s a freshman in Com pany D-l. “I spend my free weekends and holidays in Dallas with Walter’s family,” Tom said. It makes a big, happy group. The Smylies have nine children. Tom’s older brother, Teerawat, is studying for a masters degree in electrical engineering at the University of Maryland. The VMI graduate will also return to Thailand upon completion of his studies. PUTAMANONDA has made a slow scholastic start at A&M after his year at Northfield, Vt., but he spends most of his time studying and has 57 semester hours toward his degree. His English is exemplary, learned in the last three years. “Tom’s a real sharp cadet,” a Company D-l junior noted. Wednesday, May 3, 1967 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Page 3 Wildlife Science Major A rare Devil’s River black headed snake is getting a round- trip flight to Philadelphia because of the sharp eye of a freshman wildlife science student at Texas A&M. Terry Hibbitts of Arlington snared the snake on a collecting trip near Del Rio. Dr. Richard J. Baldauf, acting head of A&M’s Wildlife Science Department, said the find of the 20-inch snake is only the third known specimen. Finds Rare Snake Aerospace Clerk Given Promotion Steve Erdely III, administrative clerk in the Aerospace Studies Department, has been promoted to staff sergeant. The Air Force non-commission ed officer serves under Col. Ver non L. Head, Air Force ROTC detachment commander. Sergeant Erdely, 25, entered the Air Force in April, 1961. He served at Lowry AFB, Colo., and DaNang, Vietnam, before receiv ing assignmen at A&M last Aug ust.
