MONTREAL (A>) _ The Mon
treal Canadians, already favored
to win their third straight Stan
ley Cup championship, will have
an additional advantage in the
best-of-7 final series against
Toronto opening Thursday night
because of the absence of Larry
Jeffrey, the Leafs’ left winger.
Jeffrey, one of Toronto’s top
penalty killers, underwent sur
gery for torn ligaments in his
right knee Tuesday night when
the Leafs defeated the Chicago
Black Hawks 3-1 and Clinched
the semifinal set, four games to
two.
The second game of the series
will be played here Saturday
afternoon starting at 1:30 p.m.,
EST, and will be televised in the
United States by CBS.
SAN FRANCISCO CP) _ “We
will have to make adjustments
defensively for Thursday night’s
game,” declared Philadelphia 76er
Coach Alex Hannum whose forces
fell to some hot shooting by San
Francisco’s Warriors.
The 130-124 triumph at the Cow
Palace on Tuesday night left San
Francisco still trailing the 76ers
2-1 in their best-of-7 playoff final
but put the Warriors back in con
tention for the National Basket
ball Association title.
Rick Barry fired in 55 points
and Jim King chipped in with 28
as the Warriors returned to the
arena where they haven’t lest
this season.
Wilt Chamberlain led the Phil
adelphia scorers with 26 points
and 26 rebounds.
BALTIMORE <A>> — The Balti
more Bullets announced Wednes
day that 6-foot-10 Leroy Ellis has
signed a contract with the New
York affiliate of the new Ameri
can Basketball Association.
A spokesman for the Bullets
said that Ellis refused to sign a
National Basketball Association
contract Wednesday and said that
the Bullets would sue Ellis, the
New York ABA club, and the
ABA “for injunctive relief and
damages.”
In a statement, the Bullets said
that Ellis had breached his NBA
contract — which gives the club
renewal rights Until Sept. 1 —
and had jeopardized his profes
sional basketball career.
NEW YORK (A>> _ Eight play
ers, 6-foot-9 or taller and includ
ing 7-2 Artis Gilmore of Dothan,
Ala., are among the 40 named

Players from 27 states plus the
District of Columbia were chosen.
California had the most selectees,
four, followed by Illinois with
three.
Gilmore averaged 39 points a
game for Carver High School.
