The sophomore coed is from Corpus Christi, ind she enjoys sewing, reading, and tennis. A spring semester Engineering Graphics course will give 550 freshmen more intimate contact with the engineering profession through a “Visiting Engineers Program.” Nineteen practicing engineers from Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Corpus Christi, Beaumont, Pasadena, Bryan and Bartlesville, Okla., began meetings with sec tions of Engineering Graphics 106 March 26. Rescue Training School Is Now Being Conducted A heavy duty rescue training school is now being conducted at Texas A&M. John R. Rauch, instructor for the Firemen’s Training Division of the hosting Engineering Ex tension Service, said 18 men were expected to enroll for the 56-hour school. Classes are taught at “Disaster City,” a unique part of A&M’s Firemen’s Training Field. Guest instructors include Theo H. Fields, chief of the Houston- Harris County Civil Defense Res cue Service, Harold R. Sorensen, Brazos County Civil Defense Res cue Service, and Paul Stanforth, a Galveston Fire Department cap tain. Each engineer will meet with two sections of 30 to 60 students twice during the semester. He will serve as a consultant on four student team projects, answer general problem-solving ques tions, provide ideas paralleling company operations and methods, hold career orientation discussion, critique and evaluate finished products. Winning design problems on a home caddy, drawing table, play ground apparatus and hunting seat will be presented by teams May 10-12 for visiting engineer evaluation. “The program is designed to give freshmen a better under standing of engineering and its application,” noted Dr. James H. Earle, engineering graphics head. “It has several goals.” Immediate goals include the second-semester freshman learn ing original design development, problem solving principles, impor tance of oral, graphic and writ ten solution presentation. “Long-range goals include in volving students in projects re quiring creativity and innovation and improvement of the engi neer’s communication process,” Earl said. A fall semester visit ing engineers program empha sized generalized engineering ed ucation. Fall projects included humanities and liberal aspects dealing with social needs. Freshmen in the descriptive geometry course are instructed by Drs. J. G. McGuire, C. H. Randsdell and Earle and North Bardell, Samuel M. Cleland, Mi chael P. Guerard, Paul M. Mason, John P. Oliver and Lawrence E. Stark.
