Researcher To Head Committe
Grad Student Says Pacific Trip Going Well

neer in the Texas Transportation
Institute at Texas A&M, has been
named chairman of a national
committee in the Highway Divi
sion of the American Society of
Civil Engineers. The committee
is “Increasing Highway Engi
neering Productivity.”
Notice of the appointment was
received from Wilbur S. Smith,
a member of the Executive Com
mittee of the Highway Division
of ASCE.

A Texas A&M graduate stu
dent who participated in the first
four weeks of the Alaminos' cruise
in the Eastern Tropical Pacific
says the longest A&M oceanogra
phic research trip is “going well”.
Robert Mblinari, 23, was a tech
nician on the first leg of the
Alaminos’ first research cruise in
the Pacific, under four-nation
EASTROPAC arrangement.
Professor John D. Cochrane,
chief scientist, was pleased with
cruise results, Molinari said.
“All of the equipment was
working well,” the oceanography
graduate student noted.
MOLINARI, of New York City,
took measurements of salinity,
temperature, depth, currents and
temperature profiles as a techni
cian on the first leg of the 80-day
cruise. He said he also helped
take samples with biological nets.
The Alaminos is also acquir
ing data with a fluorimeter, new
current metes, cameras for sky
pictures, and equipment for mak
ing computer punch tape directly
from meteorological sensing de
vices.
Another graduate student re
placed Molinari, who returned to
A&M following the research ship’s
first docking at Callao, Peru. Two
other A&M scientists joined the
cruise at Callao.

Rudder.
The one-year renewal contract
supports research in 14 areas,

head and research coordinator.

nos first crossed the equator and
a week of sight-seeing in Lima.
He said a large herd of pilot
whales escorted the vessel at one
point.
“A biologist said it was very
rare to see so many whales of that
species,” Robert recounted. “Pi
lot whales usually never stay in
one spot, but these lolled around
the ship, playing and watching
us. Estimates placed 100 whales
in the herd, of which I have pic
tures.”

blindfolded, fed some “nectar of
the gods” and hosed down with
seawater to make them believe
they had been thrown overboard.
EASTROPAC studies, of which
the Alaminos is a part, aim at a
better understanding of Eastern
Pacific water and atmospheric
circulation, primary production,
plankton and region food fish.
The cruise will cover 12,000 miles
up to 650 miles off the South
American west coast and will
make port at Puntarenas, Costa
Rica, and Academy Bay of Gala
pagos Island.
