Hartley, director of A&M’s Institute of Statistics, said the ASA board of directors granted the new charter during a recent meeting in Washington. The new chapter was created primarly through efforts of facul ty and students of A&M’s Insti tute of Statistics, Hartley noted. Membership includes faculty and students from the Institute of Statistics, and from departments of business, industrial engineer ing, genetics, economics, agricul tural economics and animal science. Dr. Hartley said the chapter eventually will expend activities to the Southeastern area of Texas and make membership available to non - academic statisticians. Other plans, he noted, include joint activities with the Houston Chapter of the American Society for Quality Control. President of the 60-member chapter is Dr. J. N. K. Rao, as sociate professor of statistics. Dr. L. J. Ringer, assistant professor of statistics, is vice president. Two graduate students in the Institute of Statistics hold lead ership positions in the organiza tion. N. A. Hartmann Jr. of Ros enberg is secretary and D. L. Bayless of Hendersonville, N.
