THE BATTALION Page 4 College Station, Texas Wednesday, February 8,1 Aggies Grab Third SWC Victory, 70-67, Over Ted By GARY SHERER “Whew,” was the word most heard from Aggie partisans as the Maroon and White pulled out their fourth win of the year Tuesday night. A 70-67 VICTORY over Texas Tech was viewed by a poor turn out of 3,000 at G. Rollie White Coliseum. It was a game of op posite halves for the Aggies who started out hot and, if not for some last minute heroics, would have ended cold. The Aggies poured in 50 points in the first half, an effort that hadn’t been accomplished too much before this game. Their second-half totals were slightly less. AFTER ONE of their best first halves, the Aggies suffered one of their worst second halves as they could muster just 20 points. OPENING WITH a full-court press, the Aggies forced the Red Raiders from the West into many mistakes. They built up a lead quickly and held a 10 to 13 point margin most of the first 20 min utes. The halftime score was 50- 37. John Underwood and Terry Trippet were most instrumental in the first half surge as they pumped in 31 points between them. Making many steals, the Aggies showed the precision of veterans as they riddled the Tech defense and offense. The Barnett tip-ln came with 5:42 showing on the clock and a minute later Tech’s Billy Tapp tied it up again at 62-62. THIS WAS THE last time that Tech was to approach the lead as Sonny Benefield hit on a 19 foot jumper that put the Aggies into the lead for the last time. Barnett followed up the Bene field two-pointer with two foul shots and the Aggies were up 66-62. Tech’s Jim Nelson, with a foul shot, and the Red Raiders’ Jimmy Fullerton and Larry Lewis, with field goals, brought Tech back but two Benefield foul shots kept the Aggie lead. TRIPPET, AS IN the Texas 1 win, sank the final four shots to clinch the win and the Aggies had survived a near disaster. Reason No. 1. To keep their home record a winning one. (4-3) Reason No. 2. A win to bounce back from two bad losses on the road. Underwood and Trippet led the Aggie attack with 22 and 14, re spectively. Tapp was high for Tech with 19. The most im portant of all was to win the game for Harvey Huffstetler, a predicted star of the future for the Aggies, who had to leave school. There are many other reasons, but these, though they may be questioned seem to be the most evident. Fish Bomb HCJC Cardinals 87-73 In Preliminaries By JERRY GRISHAM On the rebound from Satur day’s 83-82 loss to the Baylor Cubs, the Aggie Fish bombed the Henderson County Junior College Cardinals, 87-73, in the varsity preliminaries Tuesday night in G. Rollie White Coliseum. The first 10 minutes of the game saw the lead change seven times before the Cardinals grabbed a one-point advantage, which they maintained until half time when they took a 40-39 lead to the dressing room. THE SECOND half opened with Mike Hazel scoring on a layup, which gave the lead to the Fish who never looked back as they rolled up a 17-point bulge of 73- 56 with 6:09 left in the game. The leading scorer for the Cardinals, Steve Huhn, fouled out with 7:53 remaining to cripple any chances HCJC had to catch up. The Fish hit 32 of 71 field goal attempts for an overall 45.1 per cent. The Cardinals connected on 27 of 64 for 42.2 per cent from the floor. IN FREE throws the Fish also had the advantage, making 23 of their 34 attempts, compared to the Cardinals’ 19 of 21. In re bounds the Aggies grabbed 49 off of the boards to 40 for HCJC. Hazel was top rebounder in the game with 15. Four of the Fish scored in the double numerals. High point for the Aggies and the game was Mike Heitmann with 26 points. Oliver Biggers had 19, Bill Brown hit for 15 and Hazel had 14. Top scorer for the visitors was Huhn who, despite fouling out, had 18 for the night. The loss gave the Cardinals a season rec ord of 9-15. THE FISH return to South west Conference play Saturday night when they travel to Hous ton to play the Rice Owlets in a preliminary to the varsity con test. They are now 5-3 for the season and have only one confer ence loss. By CHARLES ROWTON Battalion Sports Writer The latest collision between Randy Matson and Neil Stein- hauer, Oregon’s “Super-Duck,” ended in victory for the newly- elected captain of the Aggie track team. Matson won the shot-put on his last throw in the San Diego In vitational Saturday night with a heave of 66 feet 10% inches, avenging his earlier loss to Stein- hauer at San Francisco. Coach Charlie Thomas had predicted a Matson victory after viewing his practice tosses. “NO, I WASN’T surprised he beat Steinhauer,” Thomas said. “He had mentally prepared him self for this one. He’s still the greatest competitor I’ve ever seen.” Thomas reported that the mem bers of the track team elected captains recently. In addition to Matson, they chose Arie Britt and Mike Schrider. “I think the team made a good selection because the boys they chose accounted for a lot of points last year. Britt is a fine example of ‘the Twelfth Man tra dition’ because he was not re cruited and came out of the Corps to help the squad,” Thomas con tinued. BRITT RUNS the sprints and is on both relay teams. Schrider has won the Southwest Confer ence championship in the high jump for the last two years. He also won the event as a freshman. The tracksters will be back in action this weekend at the Will Rogers Indoor Games Friday and the Dallas Indoor Meet Saturday. Schrider and Matson will com pete in both meets, as will George Resley, another shot-putter. Oth- Anyone can GOOF.
