expanding considerably,” Green
hut commented. “We are appre
ciative that the Coordinating
Board approved our doctoral pro
gram.”
“Greenhut noted that the Co
ordinating Board’s stamp of
approval will allow A&M to
award doctors of philosophy de
grees in general economic theory,
and econometrics.
Many of the doctoral candi
dates will qualify for teaching
and non-teaching assistantships
in economics and mathematics,
research assistantships in the
Texas Transportation Institute
and Industrial Economics Divi
sion, or various Graduate College
fellowships.
Dr. Greenhut expects to an
nounce soon five new faculty
members to the economics staff.
The department has 90 under
graduate students.
“This department can’t help
but attain national prominence
with the basic advantages exist
ing at A&M,” Greenhut re
marked. “ Right now, however,
we are planning courses for non-
existant students and faculty.”
Greenhut cited supporting pro
grams and facilities for provid
ing greater advantages than non
land grant universities. He
pointed to the Data Processing
Center with sophisticated com
puters available for work in
quantitative economics, and the
Texas Transportation Institute,
where members may participate
in a regional science major, and
staffers are engaged in research.
Also praised by Greenhut was
A&M’s Industrial Economics
Division, where applied research
is done in regional science.
The Institute of Statistics of
fers training in statistics and
computer science,” Greenhut
said. “It is the joint sponsor
with the Economics Department
of the econometrics program.”
“It is advantageous that we
have so many people here with
engineering, mathematics and
physics backgrounds,” Greenhut
continued. “And it is especially
helpful that the type of math
taught here is the applied kind.”
“Some courses taught by the
Agricultural Economics Depart
ment are helpful in our regional
science program,” he remarked.
“Agricultural economics tends to
apply theoretical economic ideas
to practical problems. This leads
to an. exciting exchange of
thoughts. Our departments will
have the opportunity to hold joint
seminars and research pro
grams.”
