An Equal Opportunity Employer College Board Approves Doctoral Program In Eco The Texas College Coordinat ing Board has approved a doc toral program in economics at Texas A&M, effective immed iately. Dr. Frank W. R. Hubert, dean of A&M’s Liberal Arts College, made the announcement. Dr. M. L. Greenhut, Economics Department head, revealed he ex pects 13 doctoral and six masters candidates to enroll for studies in economics during the spring semester. Greenhut predicted graduate enrollment will soar to 50 by 1968. “The Economics Department is Home Ec Staffer Miss Marilyn Kay Hunter joined the Agricultural Extension Service home economics head quarters staff at Texas A&M Uni versity February 1 as consumer education specialist—clothing and textiles. In making the announcement, Extension Director John E. Hutchison said Miss Hunter will provide leadership in clothing programs related to selection and care of fabrics and buying clothes. Many of the doctoral candi dates will qualify for teaching and non-teaching assistantships in economics and mathematics, research assistantships in the Texas Transportation Institute and Industrial Economics Divi sion, or various Graduate College fellowships. Dr. Greenhut expects to an nounce soon five new faculty members to the economics staff. The department has 90 under graduate students. “This department can’t help but attain national prominence with the basic advantages exist ing at A&M,” Greenhut re marked. “ Right now, however, we are planning courses for non- existant students and faculty.” Greenhut cited supporting pro grams and facilities for provid ing greater advantages than non land grant universities. He pointed to the Data Processing Center with sophisticated com puters available for work in quantitative economics, and the Texas Transportation Institute, where members may participate in a regional science major, and staffers are engaged in research. Also praised by Greenhut was A&M’s Industrial Economics Division, where applied research is done in regional science. The Institute of Statistics of fers training in statistics and computer science,” Greenhut said. “It is the joint sponsor with the Economics Department of the econometrics program.” “It is advantageous that we have so many people here with engineering, mathematics and physics backgrounds,” Greenhut continued. “And it is especially helpful that the type of math taught here is the applied kind.” “Some courses taught by the Agricultural Economics Depart ment are helpful in our regional science program,” he remarked. “Agricultural economics tends to apply theoretical economic ideas to practical problems. This leads to an. exciting exchange of thoughts.
