Page 4 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Tuesday, January 27, 1967 Prof Wins Second Award For Texas, Mexico Study First Malaysian Graduated With A&M Agronomy Degree A scholarly study of relations between Texas and Mexico in 1842 won the second Walter Pres cott Webb History prize for a Texas A&M professor, Dr. J. M. Nance. The History and Government Department head took the $100 prize for his “Attack and Counter attack: The Texas-Mexican Fron tier, 1842.” The award is given every two years to a University of Texas graduate for a published or un published history work. An un published winning manuscript is brought out in book form by the UT Press. Dr. Nance’s “Attack and Coun ter-Attack” is the second book in a three-volume study of Texas- Mexican relations during Repub lic days. The award-winning book chronicles a series of 1842 mili tary actions. Mexican armies were marching on Texas soil, frontier settlers were strength ening defenses and Texas militia was assembling for invasion of Mexico. The first volume of Dr. Nance’s trilogy, “After San Jacinto,” re ceived the $500 Friends of the Dallas Public Library award of the Texas Institute of Letters. The third volume is due publi cation in 1968 and will focus on the Mier Expedition and its sig nificance in the frontier history of Texas and Mexico. “After San Jacinto” ..(1963) and “Attack and Counterattack” (1964) were published by the University of Texas Press. Texas A&M University recently graduated its first student from the new nation of Malaysia. He is 31-year-old Thean Soo Tee, who received his bachelor of science degree in agronomy last week. Nuclear Course Offered In Spring By Visiting Prof From its source in Burgundy, the Seine River meanders 480 miles in a northwesterly direc tion before reaching its estuary on the English Channel. Nuclear rocket propulsion will be offered for the first time this spring in Texas A&M’s Aero space Engineering Department. Associate Professor Sanley H. Lowy, developer, announced the 610 graduate course will be taught by Dr. C. G. Chezem, visiting professor of nuclear en gineering from the Los Aalamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico. Lowy said interested students should contact Dr. Chezem. Hours are to be arranged. Prerequisites are aerospace engineering 401 or 404, or the equivalent. Advanced space technology, aerospace engineering 612, also has been added to the spring schedule. Lowy will teach the TBA course. Tee was one of 12 Malaysians to come to the United States in 1965 on a Ford Foundation grant. The students were sent to various agricultural schools throughout the country. Before coming to America, Tee attended the College of Agricul ture of Malaysia and worked for that country’s Department of Agriculture where he conducted experiments on rice. When he eventually returns to his home land, he will resume his rice work, with emphasis on improvement of yields. The Malaysian has beeen an ex ceptional student at Texas A&M. He spent four semesters here and was designated a “Distinguished Student” for two semesters in the College of Agriculture. TEE’s NEXT STOP in the U. ,S. is the University of California at Davis, where he will study toward the master of science degree. And if things work out, he says, he will go for his doctoral degree before returning home. The agronomist praised Ford Foundation grant benefits, which he said are enabling Malaysians to take advantage of the excel lent training available in the U. S. Such grants will help American degrees to be recognized in Ma laysia. “Before independence, when we were under British rule, only British degrees and degrees from commonwealth countries were viewed with favor,” Tee said. Malaya, as it was known then, secured its independence from Great Britain in 1957. In 1963, the budding nation formed the Federation of Malaysia, which in cluded Malaya, Singapore, Sara wak and Sabah. Singapore broke off and became an independent na tion last year. MALAYA IS on the southern tip of Asia and just a little south west of Viet Nam. Sarawak and Sabah are in northern Barneo. Tee was bom and grew up in Malaysia's capital city of Kuala Lumpus. He and his wife, Sally, were educated in a Methodist school there, which accounts for the couple’s excellent command of English. The agronomist Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eng Kheng Tee of Penang. His father is a retired government worker. Malaysian parents bestow des criptive names on their children. Tee’s first two names, Thean Soo, translates into English as “heaven gift.” Tee itself is a family name, like Smith or Jones. Like most people from foreign lands, Tee was struck by the size of Texas and its large scale agri culture. Hunt’s, Solid Pack TOMATOES No. 300 Cans $1.00- SPECIALS THURS,, FRI., SAT. JAN. 26, 27, 28.
