Welding Foundation Engineering Design Sponsors Contest By GARY MAYFIELD The James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation of Cleveland, Ohio, is sponsoring a contest in design competition for all inter ested students, both graduates and undergraduates. According to a brochure pro duced by the firm, students may submit for competition solutions to engineering design problems related to any type of metal de vice, machine, product, or struc ture. However, the problem is not required to relate to a spcifically constructed item. “In addition,” the brochure states, “the problem can be one arising in research for a metal device, machine product or struc ture, or in the design and con struction of research apparatus. The solution to the problem must in all respects be the work of the student or students submitting it for competition.” Competition is divided into two divisions — graduate and under graduate divisions — with cash awards offered for the best writ ten papers in each division. In the undergraduate division —Division I—first prize is $1,- 500. In the graduate division— Division II—first prize is $2,000. Second place winner in Division II will receive $1,500, whereas two second place awards of $1,000 each will be given in Division I. Third and fourth prizes in Di vision II are $1,000 and $500, re spectively. In the undergraduate division three third place awards of $500 each and four fourth place awards of $250 each will be given. Bryan —Bryan— 822-6874 Thefts Increase (Continued From Page 1) have been done by professionals.” He had anticipated another outbreak of stealing prior to the Christmas holidays. This prediction proved true Dec. 14 when a student-owned 1965 Chevelle was stolen from the parking area west of Dormitory 21. The vehicle was later recov ered at Benchley. It was strip ped of its “mag” wheels, racing tires, carburetor and manifold, distributor, generator, coil, hoses and most of the wiring. “To prevent more of this, we put some of our day-duty men in extra cars beginning Tuesday night. We had two private cars and both Campus Security ve hicles patrolling the campus area all Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights of the week be fore the holidays,” Powell ex plained. Added patrolmen did not halt the thievery completely, however. The front bucket sets were stolen from a Plymouth Sports Fury the night of Dec. 15. The rise of stolen articles did not end with the holidays. Two nights after classes re-started, three saddles, bridles and blank ets were pilfered from the A&M rodeo arena sheds. Carburetors, transistor radios, wallets, and watches became common names on Campus Security reports im mediately before and after the holidays. Business picked up for some one Jan. 6. On that night, an oceanography department’s truck was burglarized while it was parked outside the building. A gun rack, shortwave radio, over coat, and two boxes of shotgun shells were reported missing. Chief Powell proposed a two fold solution to the rise of area thefts: persons who have any thing missing or presumed stolen should report it to us. The more reports we have, the more we have in the form of evidence or clues.” Powell repeated that six men added to the force would enable it to act more efficiently in prevent ing and solving the rising number of burglaries.
