is. ££. THE BATTALION bursday, November 17, 1966 College Station, Texas Page 7 Showdown For No. 1 BY GARY SHERER I The 1966 college football sea- ison is approaching its end. As a pitting climax, the schedule-mak ers scored a victory by slating two titans against each other this Saturday afternoon. 1 At that time, East Lansing, Mich., will be the football capitol ; of the world. The Michigan State iSpartans will host the Fighting llrish from Notre Dame in what is Icalled, and rightly so, the battle for No. 1. f The game will pit the top- |ranked team in the nation against No. 2 (Ah! a bookmaker’s dream) in a match that will draw inter- lational as well as national at- | tention. [ Last year’s game was billed as Iguch, but it turned out to be false pdvertising. Notre Dame was Meld to less than 20 rushing is iyards by a mammoth Spartan ed Kine. The final score was 12-3 . | and the Spartans probably could ■have scored more, had not Notre fcame’s press clippings scared ; them. i In all fairness to Notre Dame, |it had some problems last year, ft'he Irish never found a quarter back and the Michigan State game wasn’t their only loss. I This year they defiintely have n quarterback. They are already lalling Terry Hanratty a legend —and he is only a sophomore. He Mas a long way to go before he lis another Johnny Lujack or Bob ■Williams, but he also has two Imore years. So anything can happen. Michigan State lost its quar- [terback of last year, Steve Ju- day. Juday wasn’t a legend, but he was a good football player and the acknowledged team lead er. This year Jimmy Raye has taken his place and, though he may not be another Juday, he [bears out the saying that a quar terback is only as good as his team. And his team is good. The two teams have sailed through the season, beating a myriad of opponents rated from good to mediocre. If they were good before playing one of the two giants, they came out medi ocre after going through the meat-grinder. The way Notre Dame has demolished every op ponent so far reminds boxing fans of the way Rocky Marciano used to end fighters careers. Consider Oklahoma as a prime example. The Sooners were un beaten going into the Notre | Dame game, and were playing on I their home field. They had a new coach who was even being given Bud Wilkinson’s shoes to try on. But Notre Dame slaughtered them 38-0. Since that game, Ok lahoma has won two and lost two. Maybe it would have come out the same if it hadn’t played i Notre Dame, but it does make Sometimes, everyone tries to coll at once In order to avoid the 8:00 p.m. rush, you might want to consider placing your long distance calls ON SUNDAY, when lowest long distance rates are effective all day. SOUTHWESTERN STATES TELEPHONE CO.'W A Mtmb«r of >f»« GTlE Family of Companies one wonder. Michigan State also has marched through its season, un marked except for the Ohio State game. The final score of that game was 11-8 with State pull ing it out in the fourth quarter with a field goal by their bare footed kicker, Dick Kenney. It must be mentioned that the game was played in a driving rain storm at Columbus, Ohio, where Woody Hayes has a way of put ting the hex on the opposing team. A factor to be considered is that the Saturday game is Mich igan State’s last of the year, while Notre Dame has still to travel to California for their battle with USC next week. All things considered though, it should be a tremendous game and the winner will be proclaimed No. 1 in the nation, regardless of bowl results. One more game shapes up as a battle this week — USC at UCLA. The winner will get the Rose Bowl bid to meet Purdue. The other top teams either have easy games or aren’t play ing. They shape up this way: 1. Notre Dame 2. Michigan State 3. Alabama 4. Nebraska 5. Georgia Tech 6. Arkansas 7. UCLA 8. USC 9. Georgia 10. But I’ve been blocked out of the play by a math major. He knows math from A = Pi R 2 to E = MC 2 . Now she says he’s found the formula for success with her. All he has to do is mutter "Coronet R/T," and I get thrown for a loss. Believe me, this is no equilateral triangle that I’m in. Outside of telling me to bench myself, have you any advice? FALLEN STAR DEAR FALLEN STAR: Now’s the time to plunge. Coronet R/T isn’t his ex clusive formula. Your nearby Dodge Dealer has it, too. And it comes almost as easily as the cube root of 27. Then how can the girl of your dreams resist two Stfperstars . . . you and your Coronet R/T? From there on out, your math major will be the victim of diminishing returns. Huddle with your Dodge Dealer now, and get your signals straight. And why not? Look what you’ll have going for you in your Dodge Coronet R/T, convertible or two-door hardtop. All standard, too. 440-cubic-inch Magnum V8 engine. Dual exhausts. Heavy-duty brakes and suspension. High-performance Red Streak tires. And exclusive R/T grille and hood scoop design, full length paint stripes, and nameplates, front, rear and sides. So get with your Dodge Dealer, and your problem will solve itself.
