C. — Spring thaws often signal im pending headaches for the engi neers who must maintain asphalt highways. The thaws, along with excess moisture and extreme tem peratures, can take a heavy toll by reducing the load-carrying capacity of asphalt roadways. As a preventive measure, local officials periodically find it nec essary to impose load restric tions on such highways. Unfor tunately, the decisions to do so are often made on a “rule of thumb” basis. In response to the need for more objective criteria for apply ing load limits, the Highway Re search Board-administered Na tional Cooperative Highway Re search Program (NCHRP) has awarded an 18-month $50,000 contract to the Texas A&M Re search Foundation for research by the Texas Transportation In stitute to seek a solution to the problem. The project contract calls for the development of a method that is nondestructive, as well as simple and rapid to con duct. There will be three phases to the project: I I 1 DON’T DON’T DON’T MIND MIND MIND EITHER meeting of the don’t minds If you don’t mind having all the details of planning a banquet or convention taken care of for you, call Ramada Inn. We’ll make sure your meeting is trouble-free . . . no matter what size your group! Try our fast, friendly breakfast and luncheon service. RAMADAINN Bryan-College Station 846-8811 PHASE 1 will be concerned with the development of a detailed plan and will include making ar rangements with several northern states for use of certain high ways in the research. PHASE 2 will be concerned with the selection of test sections and making measurements of relative pavement stiffness. PHASE 3 will be concerned with data analysis and the writing of a final report to be published by the Highway Research Board for the NCHRP. A&M Gets Grant To Do Research For Professors Four National Science Founda tion grants totaling $81,040 have been awarded to Texas A&M to conduct summer research pro grams for college teachers. Coleman Loyd, NSF coordina tor at A&M, said the programs are for faculty members at insti tutions not currently doing re search. Offerings are in physics, civil engineering, chemistry and plant sciences. Loyd said teachers selected for the June 5 to Aug. 25 sessions will receive, in addition to tui tion, travel and dependents’ allow ances, $75 weekly if pre-doctoral candidates, and $100 weekly if post-doctoral students. Dr. O. Dayle Sittler directs re search in physics. Dr. Charles Samson heads the civil engineer ing program. In chemistry, the director is Dr. Edward A. Meyers.
