Vice President is Alfred O. Tramp, meter supervisor for the City of Austin. The use of laser beams in ex ploding cancerous tumors was discussed by a statistics expert during a graduate lecture last week at Texas A&M University. “The laser,” Dr. Marvin Zelen explained, “is a concentration of energy for high density. It de- destroys tumors by thermal energy.” Dr. Zelen of the Mathematical Statistics and Applied Mathe matics Section of the National Cancer Institute has been work ing for several years in the ap- BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES Ob* 4ar <« v . ... ii per w •ach additional day mum chars*—50* ■r word Minimum charge— Clanified Diapl 90* per column inch each ineertion DEADLINE 4 p.m. day before publication FOR RENT i- - - — — ~~~ ^ REGISTERED AK.C TOY POODLE [PUPPIES, silver and silver bietre, 403-A "Culpepper Drive, C.S. 365tfn FOR SALE 1965 Mustang, power, air, automatic, low mileage, like new. 846-4431. 365tfn GARAGE SALE! He said the models give some insight into qualitative fea tures of disease and suggest some implications toward pre dicting the possibility of recov ery for a cancer victim. Giving an illustration, he said models indicate that the laser works best on small tumors — less than two inches in diameter, and that application of larger amounts of energy for larger tumors might be practical.” In the application of the pulse laser, he said the beam seems to char the tumor with the first pulse, making it hard to get more energy into the tumor. Dr. Zelen also spoke briefly about breast cancer. He said there are 60,000 cases of breast cancer per year in this country, and that breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women 40 to 60 years old. Dr. Zelen’s complicated re search is to develop a workable model for predicting possibility of cure of breast cancer in vari ous stages of advancement. He said statistics show that younger women have more malignant breast cancers than older women. Also, Zelen observed, tumors grow faster in younger women. Pointing again to statistics, Zelen said women with large families have lesser rate of breast cancer than do women without children. Dr. Zelen was introduced by Dr. H. O. Hartley, director of A&M’s Institute of Statistics. His visit was sponsored by a National Science Foundation grant. The Wednesday address was one of six lectures presented on campus by Dr. Zelen during a four-day period. Faculty Will Participate In Computer Conference Six Texas A&M faculty mem bers are program participants in the Conference for Computers in Humanistic Research Nov. 17-18. Also participating in the pro gram will be Dr. H. O. Hartley, Institute of Statistics director; Robert L. Smith Jr., DPC direc tor, history professor Claude H. Hall, Cushing Library data proc essing supervisor Bruce Stewart, economics professor Allan Pulsi pher and business analysis in structor Gene Dippel. Hall, Hartley and Smith will participate in a panel discussion. Stewart chairs a session on in formation retrieval an d P ulsi- pher will speak during a content- analysis session. Dippel will chair a symposium, on which Smith will serve. Computer Wives Club mem bers will have charge of the re ception desk at the Ramada Inn. They will key-punch cards for a computer listing of conference participants. Mrs. Kenneth Rus sell is club president. Dr. Hierth of the English De partment will make transporta tion arrangements and Stolle has charge of financial records. Huggett said 120 persons have pre-registered for the conference, with participants coming from as far away as Mexico City and Calgary. ATTENTION ! ! !
