r m THE BATTALION Page 2 College Station, Texas Wednesday, November 2, 1966 CADET SLOUCH by Jim Earle Sound Off “I can remember when it was ‘wait’ll next year’—-and this season, too!” Dear Aggies, Today you chose the 1967 Aggie Sweetheart, Miss Kathy Austin. She now begins her reign, and I end mine. In these few words I want to try to convey to you how very much being a part of A&M has meant to me. I wish I could thank each one of you individually for the beautiful memories I have from my reign as the 1966 Ag gie Sweetheart. Being able to be a part of your wonderful university has meant more to me than I can ever tell you here, but I want you to know that you will always be in my heart. God bless you. Sincerely, Cheri Holland 1966 Aggie Sweetheart ★ ★ ★ Editor, The Battalion I wish to address my remarks to the Student Body of Texas A&M, and I consider it to be both civilian and Corps members. I was a Corps member at A&M, Class of ’47, and as any ole Ag in the class of ’48, ’49 and ’50 will tell you, I was “bloody” and a real hell-raiser in my day. I must say that hazing was fun, “good bull” and did a great deal to build character at A&M, I would be in favor of some form of legal “hazing” even today, or a Code if you please, sanctioned by everyone concerned. I’m gra tified to know that freshmen are still “whipping out,” and I as sume that the other classes are “whipping out” as well. After graduation, and you en ter the business world, you will learn that the things you learn at A&M, compulsory or not, such as “whipping out” and making fri ends quickly will be a great asset in years to come and absolutely will contribute to your success. People throughout the State have told me about A&M and its friendliness on the campus. They never cease to wonder at our fraternal spirit, and even our closeness, though strangers, through the years after gradua tion. Frankly, I hated to see the Quick Quip THE BATTALION Opinions expressed in The Battalion are those of the student writers only. Texas A&M students use a bulletin board in the university’s Academic Building to help rid themselves of all sorts of white elephants. Monday board scanners must have thought someone was pull ing a trick-or-treat stunt on them at Halloween. Amidst cards advertising elec tric guitars, senior boots, slide rules, cameras, refrigerators and cars was a neatly lettered num ber offering baby skunks. As knowledgable students turn ed up their noses, they read a line in smaller print: “Already Deodorized”. In case you run out of treats, you might pick up several more in room AA, Animal Pavilion, Texas A&M. civilian student enter A&M, at first, but like the Corps; they, too, can make a contribution and be real Aggies as we have al ways known them to be. They will have to act like freshman when they are freshman and treat upperclassmen with the respect they deserve. The same applies to adopting traditions as well. Those of us who have gone on before you want our tradition honored. We would like to see you work together harmoniously, to love one another as we did. I will be disappointed if the Corps doesn’t accept the chal lenge of leadership in preserving our traditions, but to do so in a gentlemanly fashion. Gig’em Aggies, Wm. J. Garrett Dallas, Texas Great Pumpkin Visits Dorms Linus was right! Who would have believed that the sincerest pumpkin patch in the world would be in the swamp that serves as a quadrangle for dorms 17-18 and 20. But patient and true to form, good Ags waited and watched and sure enough, as the last strains of tattoo echoed, there he came. So to all it was a good Hallo ween, and a good Halloween to all.
