Main 822-6000 By GERALD GARCIA Battalion Sports Editor Move over Southwest Conference quarterbacks, espe cially Bill Bradley, and make room for Edd Hargett. Hargett, showing the poise of a veteran, masterminded five touchdown marches, passing for two, setting up two with passes and capping one himself with a seven-yard run, in leading the Texas Aggies to a convincing trouncing of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 35-14. The win was A&M’s first after two losses and it came in the Aggies’ home opener before 23,500 fans. IN THE process, the Aggies scored the most points since 1950 in Kyle Field and the most since they took Trinity, 55-0, in 1961 and in the same year scored 38 points against Texas Tech. But, in the opening minutes of the initial period, the game looked like it would be a standstill because of offen sive ineptness. Then, heralded Tech halfback Mike Lienert swept the Aggies’ left end, eluded five tackles, and broke up the middle for 59 yards before safety Curley Hallman stopped him at the A&M seven. From there it took Tech three plays to light up the scoreboard. Quarterback John Scovell scored from the three after a fine fake to Leinert. After Kenny Vinyard added the extra point, Tech led, 7-0. AGAIN, IT looked like the seven points Tech had scored would be enough, but since Tech-A&M had reputa tions of being explosive, Hargett went to work. First, Tech fumbled on the A&M 27 but the Aggies could not take advantage and finally gave up the ball on the 14 on an incompleted pass. Then, Tech gave the Aggies the ball right back on another fumble, but this time Hargett took the Aggies in. Halfback Bill Sallee carried for six up the middle and Bob Long went for three. After fullback Ronnie Lindsey got the first down, Sallee ran for three. Then Hargett hit split end Larry Lee but the pass was ruled incomplete be cause Lee was out of the end zone when he caught it. Hargett didn’t let this bother him. He just came back with the same play, except this time he hit Long. The march took five plays and covered 26 yards. After Glynn Lindsey kicked the extra point, the scored was tied, 7-7. STILL, THE fans had not seen the fireworks that Hargett and Scovell were supposed to provide. But Har gett did not disappoint them. The Aggies took possession on their own 46 after Tech was forced to punt. With first and 10 on the 35, Hargett dropped back, faked right and threw left to Lee, who was being pressured by two Tech defenders at the one. Ronnie Lindsey then rammed the middle for the last yard and the Aggies had their second touchdown in less than five minutes. But Hargett was not through. After the ensuing kickoff, Hallman picked off a Scovell pass and returned it 19 yards. After a 15-yard penalty for clipping, the Aggies took up shop at their own 22. Hargett fired to Lee for 19. Then he bombed one to Tommy Maxwell for 41, and after a pass interference call, A&M took over at the two. Wendell Housley carried twice and the Aggies had scored three touchdowns in nine minutes. Hargett then passed to Maxwell for the two-point conver sion and A&M took a 21-7 lead at intermission. After the second half kickoff, the Aggies failed to move and were forced to punt, but Tech wasn’t ready to play dead. Scovell marched the Red Raiders 80-yards in 11 plays to get the Red Raiders within seven points of A&M. The drive was climaxed by Leinert’s one-yard plunge, but the passing combination of Scovell and Larry Gilbert kept the drive alive. Of the 80 yards, they combined for 48 with post patterns. After an exchange of punts, Scovell drove Tech into field goal range, but an attempt from the Aggie 39 was short. NOW IT WAS the fourth quarter and the way Har gett performed in the first even-number period, the crowd could sense another big play. After he had driven the Aggies 67 yards on short passes to Maxwell and Lee and the running of Housley and Sallee, Hargett dropped to pass. He looked for Lee in the left covered and when he found him covered he scrambled and looked for Long. He also was covered. Then Hargett spotted tight end Tommy Buckman five yards deep in the end zone and flung a 24- yard scoring pitch. Glynn Lindsey tacked the extra point and A&M led 28-14. But the Aggies were not satisfied. After Tech punted, A&M took over at the 46. Seven plays latter, Hargett faked a running play and then a pass before he kept the final seven yards to give the Aggies their biggest point produc tion in Kyle Field since 1950.
