Ford Dealer day’s activities with a fast-mov ing exercise in audience partici pation. He gave tips on presid ing, hosting, speaker introduc tions and group “buzz sessions.” Dr. John P. Abbott, professor in the Department of English, explored the mechanics of com munications and planning neces sary for the organized leader. “WHAT WE REALLY need is a plan for planning,” he ex plained, one that is “simple, se lective, adaptable, flexible and entails a minimum of paper work.” A leadership etiquette discus sion by area civic leaders Mrs. Patricia Peters and Mrs. Jo Ann Smerdon provided a refreshing change of pace. The pair offered tips on dating etiquette, introductions, invita tions and house guest and dining protocol. Thomas J. Deen, a retired Ma rine lieutenant colonel, followed with a lecture on “Dynamic Leadership.” “This country is crying for peo ple who can take the leadership responsibility,” he said. “A n d there is not a person who cannot become a leader in whatever area of life he is concerned.” ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR of the American Youth Foundation, Deen also dispelled any notions linking leadership with type or physical build. “You’re not born a leader but you’re born with the ability to he one.” A “What Is Leadership?” pan el composed of Lt. Col. F. M. Hammock, Texas Cong. Rayford Price and moderator Dr. William A. Luker probed into the ques tion of leadership from the mili tary, home and community angles. According to Hammock, the at tributes of leadership are dedica tion, courage of conviction and the “can-do spirit.” “Leadership Sensitivity” was the topic expounded by Dr. Bar din H. Nelson of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Sociology. Concerning sensitivity techniques, he explained that in formation leads to skills, support to interest, understanding to in fluence and satisfaction to recog nition. DR. ROBERT S. Randall, of the Department of Education and Psychology, discussed “Emergent Leadership” followed by group discussions of timely topics en abling delegates to put theory in to practice. Memorial Student Center Di rector J. Wayne Stark followed with a talk on “Opportunities Unlimited.” President Earl Rudder and Dean of Students James Hanni- gan discussed the role of the ad ministration in a question and answer session moderated by Dorsey McCrory, director of the Development Office. Extension sociologist Reagan V. Brown spoke on the role of human behavior in relation to the leader. THE FOUR motivations for human behavior, he said, are recognition, response, new ex perience and security. Utilizing numerous charts, he described the normal person, the neurotic and the psychotic. Dr. H. O. Kunkel, associate di rector of the Experiment Sta tion, closed the conference with his wrap-up of the proceedings. “All major accomplishments are but pyramids of action,” he said. “Leadership of tomorrow will very likely require a retool ing of our thinking.” Trail Ride Scheduled By Local Group Sunday The College Station Saddle Club has announced a trail ride Sun day starting at 8:30 a.m. from the Bryan Saddle Club Arena. Frank Malik, president of the club, invites all horse enthusiasts to participate in this 18 mile all day ride.
