ill 1 Page 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, September 8, IJNJe THE BATTALION Physiologist New Life Van Overbeek To Head Sciences Institute Dr. Jahannes van Overbeek, chief plant physiologist of Shell Development Company, has been named director of the newly created Institute for Life Sciences at Texas A&M. President Earl Rudder also appointed Col. William P. Fife as assistant director of adminis tration for the institute. The Institute of Life Sciences is a division of the College of Science. Graduate programs in most important areas of the life sciences will be emphasized, Rudder explained. He said the Department of Biology will merge with the institute. Other areas of speciali zation include marine biology, genetics, plant and animal regu lations, photobiology, and envi ronmental biology, which in cludes pollution in marine work. “We are looking to Dr. Over beek and Col. Fife to guide a large expansion of our graduate program,” Rudder said. At Modesto, Calif., Overbeek has led Shell researchers since 1947 in fundamental studies of plant growth regulators, combin ing this responsibility with lead ership of teams on plant nutri tion, herbicides and exploratory biology. Overbeek for four years headed plant physiology research at the Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Puerto Rico. He studied bi ology, chemistry and physics at the Universities of Lyden and Utrecht, and earned the Ph.D. cum laude in 1933 from Utrecht. The king of Belgium named him Doctor honoris causa in agron omy in 1960. Fife earned a doctorate in physiology from Ohio State Uni versity in 1962. He has as B.S. degree in zoology from the Uni versity of Oregon and a master’s degree from George Washington University. INFORMAL PARTY IN HIS HONOR Dr. A. V.
