First Female Math Prof Likes Astronomy, Music A classical piano playing teach er with a yen for astronomy is the first female math professor at Texas A&M. Dr. Ruth E. Goodman joined the department this summer un der new math head Dr. Morris Ostrofsky. She will organize college algebra, teach three courses of 102 and senior-level modem algebra. Being the first lady math prof at A&M isn’t a new experience for Miss Goodman, who said she had a similar honor at an earlier teaching post. “Several times in the course of my studies, I’ve been the only woman in a class,” she noted. Eleven years of teaching back ground at numerous institutions will be enhanced by her indus trial experience at Westinghouse she feels. “I think I’ll have an advantage, having been out in industry,” she explained. “This frequently hap pens in freshman math. A ques tion is asked about a practical problem. When the teacher says it was solved industrially, this way a class sits up and listens!” Miss Goodman was with West inghouse at Baltimore and Pitts burgh as an advisory mathema tician and digital computer tech niques section manager 12 years before coming to A&M. She taught at Syracuse, Vassar, Queens College and Duquesne University prior to 1953, when she joined Westinghouse. The full professor had a year’s leave from the firm to teach at an engineering school, Rose Poly technic Institute at Terre Haute, Ind. She took degrees at Ball State Teachers College, Indiana and Pennsylvania Universities after graduating from Atherton High School for Girls at Louisville, Ky. A Bennett Fellowship she held in graduate school was one of five available. “When I first started graduate work, I had the idea of being an astronomer,” she confided. “I always had interest in science.” The basic tool of all science won out, however, and Dr. Good man became a mathematician. She first worked for Ostrofsky in 1948 at Duquesne, when was department chairman. H have been associated since. Piano, swimming and cool are her favorite pastimes, i she is eager to locate her pj and kitchen in an apartment “I prefer classical music i wish I could play Bach belt she remarked. Experiment!; with Chinese and Italian ret: fits her culinary whims. | favorite is Chinese egg roll. Weekly tests supplemen: schedule of two or three m hour quizes and the final, Miss Goodman doesn’t plan) surprises for her math studs; “We’ll start one class will 10 to 15 minute quiz,” shepn ised. “It will be on a set days the students will know whs; is.” GIL S RADIO & T\ Sales: Curtis Mathis Service: All makes and modti including color T.i and multiplex FM 2403 S.
