Second Book
Meteorologist John F. Griffiths
of Texas A&M has his second
book in as many years rolling
off Oxford University presses in
England.
“Applied Climatology” is an
80,000-word volume of introduc
tory nature. Griffiths expects it
to fill needs of high school, col
lege students and laymen inter
ested in how climate affects en
vironment.
“This is the first book dealing
specifically with the subject in
the English language,” noted the
Meteorology Department associ
ate professor. He said there is
growing interest in environment
al sciences.
The general treatise devotes
chapters to climate and humans,
animals, agriculture, forestry and
buildings, to name a few.
Jamaica will be host to the
Eighth Bristish Empire and Com
monwealth Games in August.

lobby was filled with old peo
ple who had finally decided to
• venture away from the safety
of their home to see natut^'s
wonderland. Four elderly ladies
were busy at a game of bridge.
| Two others were vigorously de-
I scribing the most beautiful China
they had discovered in a nearby
! gift shop. Most of the tables
| were occupied by grandmothers
writing post cards. One old mAn
| was sitting in a dark corner sol-
: emnly surveying the rest of the
I people. An announcement in
formed us that Old Faithful was
about to erupt. Few cared. It
was cold outside. Amazed by
! these American tourists, I left
;the smoke-filled room; and as
; the fresh cold air hit me, I was
sorry that they had not come
sooner when they could have en-
| joyed the beautiful forest rather
; than waiting until they could
afford it.
